AFAIK songs were downloaded and stored on the karaoke machine.

The moment you powered your DC down the songs were gone.

There is a disc, but I think it's pretty limited to about 500 songs or so; that I would imagine most people who haven't grown up in Japan, or followed the music scene there fairly closely, wouldn't know very well.

In the day there was a server that you could connect to with 15,000 songs or so, I believe.

So you can still use it with that disc? Is that what you're saying?...

If so, wouldn't it be possible to hack the disc to make other songs available?...

I haven't actually tried using it, but I know there's a disc with it. I'm hoping I'm not mistaken about the rest, but that's what I recall reading.

I'm not really the one to ask about the logistics of hacking it, but I would think, theoretically, it might be possible to make custom track lists on discs, or maybe even loading songs into the system itself from the VMU or custom discs. Again, I haven't used it, so I don't really know how exactly the software works.

This is an awesome collection! I wish I purchased more saturn and dreamcast while I was in Japan. Speaking of which it was interesting to see how all of this stuff is priced in Japan. Most of the accessories you can get for under $5. I got the karaoke accessory boxed for $5. The dream was $4 and Samba de Amigo $4. Somehow prices become outrageous when bringing this stuff to the US and I can tell you that it is not because of shipping.

Thank you.
I'd say Dreamcast and Saturn stuff is generally some of the cheaper stuff that you could collect in Japan, as long as you aren't going after the legitimately super-rare games/consoles. The shooters are pretty much always expensive, but when I see games like Sega Rally 2 or Samba de Amigo on Ebay stores for ~$10 + their crazy EMS onry shipping options, I get pretty upset.
Would be nice if I could get Amazon JP or Trader.com to ship to the US.

The Dreamcast Karaoke has everything coded so you cannot add stuff. So no CD-G support, which is silly since that is the defacto standard Karaoke format. I was looking into it since I had the option of getting some Karaokes for cheap, but it was just not worth it.

from SegaRetro:
Sega Kara is a piece of Sega Dreamcast karaoke software distributed with the Dreamcast Karaoke in Japan. Sega Kara interacts wit the Dreamcast Karaoke, allowing the Dreamcast to connect to the internet to download songs. It also has a few bundled on the disc to get users started.
As all of the official Dreamcast servers have been switched off, the main feature of both Sega Kara and the Dreamcast Karaoke is now inaccessible.
...so it sounds like that disc has a few songs on it anyway.

what's this about now? There was a Saturn stick that was just a re-branded DC stick? Got pics of this thing (including the converter inside?)
