My Fair Lady > Conan the Barbarian

I have been excited about The Master for a long time. You got QUITE the early preview, Luke - it doesn't hit until mid-October. I do expect Oscar nominations, as Paul Thomas Anderson's work is almost always phenomenal (There Will be Blood is one of my all time favorites) and Philip Seymour Hoffman almost always hits it out of the park. In any case, I am excited to be moving soon to the "good part" of the movie-watching year after all the superhero and other formulaic action movies are finished their reign at the box office.

Based strictly on early buzz and the strength of director/cast, I would bet the Oscar Best Picture nominations look something like:

Moonrise Kingdom
The Master
Zero Dark Thirty
The Great Gatsby (although IMDB has this listed as 2013 now? I saw a "Christmas" trailer I thought...)
Argo
Lincoln
To The Wonder
Amour
Django Uncahined (maybe)
The Hobbit (maybe)

That's it. So obvious I'm almost embarrassed. THE MASTER feels a lot like THERE WILL BE BLOOD, and it should but once you see THE MASTER, Dave, I think you'll agree there are a lot of parallels between the two movies. Philip Seymour Hoffman does knock it out of the park as always, but the academy may as well give "best performance" to Joaquin Phoenix now. Always thought Joaquin was an okay actor, but he gives the performance of his career in THE MASTER and it is quite incredible. Daniel Day-Lewis certainly has a lot to live up to if he plans on snagging the Oscar from Phoenix (can't wait to see LINCOLN How many movies has JGL starred or co-starred in this year? Five?).

Yeah, really lucky enough to get a super early preview, but I'm a tad upset as I was supposed to see LOOPER this week and didn't. THE MASTER is a lot like THE KING'S SPEECH, superb movie with great story telling, but I was really looking forward to seeing Bruno shoot some shit up. Can't wait to see LOOPER, but I guess I'll have to.

GREAT GATSBY got pushed back with a few other movies.

was hoping for so-bad-it's-good. Felt a lot closer to so-bad. Sucks since I had wanted to see it for so long. Maybe that's what ruined it for me though. If anyone's interested the whole movie is up on Youtube. But be warned, I actually lost interest halfway through.

Oh man, I'm sorry. I don't know if even the MST3K writers could make JOYSTICKS enjoyable.

I had a friend who walked out of TOTAL RECALL (2012) last night. Now I didn't like the movie, but walking out is a strong statement. He said something close to "I felt like I was wasting my free time watching crap. During a weekend you should enjoy what you're doing, and I would have rather been at home having a beer watching tv than watching that s#!t. "

And my friend, "brand-x" isn't one to complain about a movie. In all my years of knowing him, I've never heard him have such disdain for a movie. I've seen walkouts before, but not over a movie like Total Recall. But "Brandolion" has a point, it is his free time. Once my butt is in the seat, I'm committed to watching the movie, but I enjoy movies a lot more than my buddy does.

The only move I've ever walked out of was the Eddie Murphy remake of The Nutty Professor, during the second farting dinner scene. It was that point that I realized that the basest lowest common denominator humor was no longer for me.

Only movie I couldn't bring myself to finish was Live Free or Die Hard. I kinda feel like I should give it another chance someday though.

I wanted to turn off Alien Resurrection about 30 minutes in, but left it on to see if it'd get any better. It didn't.

Bathroom humor can still be hilarious. One of the best things about 50/50 is a toilet humor joke.

When PASSION OF THE CHRIST debuted, holy fuck did people leave left and right (I'm serious, both left and right exists, wokka wokka). Some crying, some with disgust, and others just didn't care for the movie (I didn't do a survey, but it was fairly obvious).

Had I not been with the in-laws the only movie I think I would have left early on would be THE BUCKET LIST. That movie was terrible, predictable, and boring. What a waste of talent.

Duuuuuude I saw that on USA's Up All Night many years ago. I thought "yeah cool video games!" but then I saw quite a bit *more* than that....

Gotta admit they had a lot of great classics in there.
