There's a version with enhanced loading times...

Its true, you won't find many people praising Last Hope, probably because its a memorizor. Granted, you won't find many people praising Deathsmiles either.

Shmup people are weird, they apparently "love" shmups, but then hate on 90% of them because those 90% are not the same as the 10% they do like.

I really like the game. I think it presents itself in a great way, and it really had me wanting to figure out how to navigate each corridor. I prefer playing it with a controller though, so that the shoulder buttons rotate your pod. I dunno... the game feels r-type, but with better control over your pod.

If you ever see it for a good deal, Pink Bullets is even better, as it adds in a few multipliers based on chaining enemies and absorbing bullets with your pod. I really like both releases though.

And fwiw, I did not like Dux.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a shot. I'm spoiled by the hard drive versions.

Fixed.

I'm noticing this more this year, my second in STGT. There seem to be a dozen or so just absolute snobs who come out of the woodwork just for STGT. I've found now 2 years in a row the site is a pissy-bitch fest one month a year. Too bad, because the most active members on the site don't share that snob-mentality and the site can get a bad name becuase of the few, but that's the case with any loud minority.

Back on track, for MM. So your talking about the score maxing at 999,999,999,999 right? Because...i've never hit that and am wanting to play on PCB..

So when you say half-way through, do you really mean like, stage 5 and beyond? Because i've hit stage 4 and only in the 300bil range, or maybe i'm just terrible at scoring so far.

Main question I guess is - are the point values completely the same up until it stops counting. IE, if i'm scoring 50bil on stage 1, will I also score 50bil on the DC version?

Speaking of arcade-perfect: NFL Blitz 2000 and 2001 for the Dreamcast are flawless ports of the arcade.

I hear ya. I was hoping that site wasn't full of that all year, one would think "do these people even LIKE shmups at all?" (also in reference to Dun's post)

NFL Blitz 2001 also has team-exclusive playbooks with I think 3 (?) unique plays per team. I love it even more that I hunted down and found the code to play as the radio station DJ teams (which I mentioned somewhere long ago on this forum).

EDIT from that original post:

In the Sega Dreamcast version there are 9 secret teams: You access all secret teams by hitting up-right-down-left on the directional pad when you are on the select a team screen. The teams are made up of radio station on-air staffs and 1200 Squad members. The following teams are in the game: K-Rock (NY) KROQ (LA) WHFS (DC) Y100 (Philly) Live -105 (San Francisco) KMEL (San Francisco) WBCN (Boston) KNDD The End (Seattle) Cornerstone 1200 Squad (assorted DJs including Tigger, Scrap, Pete Rock, Green Lantern)

I also enjoy the 2K games and how Sega was really trying to make those games like a real TV broadcast. Picked up a whole mess of them in a 5-6 game lot on eBay.

Troll... :P

I guess if you are into the bullet-hell/manic shooter thing heavily, you won't find much on the PCE (or really pre-DoDonPachi or Batsugun anywhere). Still, I really can't believe anyone would say games like Blazing Lazers, Soldier Blade, Spriggan, Gate of Thunder or Lords of Thunder are overrated (Sapphire might be, as people's expectations for it seem to be at Radiant Silvergun levels of godliness). They are absolute top notch shoot 'em ups, but of course the styles are complete different from what you see on the DC.

I'm late to the party on this one. Has Noise lost to the Dreamcast yet?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

@ Breetai: Gates of Thunder and Lords of Thunder are great, best on the system. Red actually decided to play their game after developing it this time, and they created a game that has a good difficulty. The soldier games I enjoy purely for their caravan modes, but still quite enjoy playing those. Some of the best competition that can be had on a console shooter.

Blazing Lazers though, just like MUSHA, did everything right, and forgot the difficulty completely. Soldier and thunder games aside, unbalanced difficulty of some sort plagues almost every PCE shooter. They are either fall-asleep easy (Dead Moon, Terraforming, Spriggan), or arcade ports that took already difficult games and skewed their difficulty in the easy direction (P47), or the way-too-hard direction (Tatsujin)

I probably wouldn't call the system overrated in seriousness though, that was indeed just a troll, just because I love seeing you talk so passionately about the PCE.

And for the record, I love pre-bullet hell shooters. I think some of the stuff by Seibu, Irem, Video System, and especially Toaplan, Taito, and NMK, is as good or better than a lot of bullet hell shooters. NMK is probably the most underrated shmup dev ever, and its a damn shame.

Yikes, sorry Noise. Just like Breetai to the PCE, I seem to turn any thread slightly related to shmups into a full on shmup-thong-along.
