I agree, the 2D games are better. I'd throw in the 2 NES Zeldas in there too.

Loco Roco PSP
Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy PSP
Catrap Game Boy
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions PSP
Scribblenauts DS
Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire GBA
Duck Tales NES
Panzer Dragoon Orta XBox

Games on the list: Panzer Dragoon Orta
Games off the list: Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Grim Fandango, Resident Evil 4

Last month I said I thought I'd remove at least 2, hopefully 3 or 4 games from this list this month, and I accomplished that goal with 3 - Grim Fandango, Resident Evil 4 and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts were all finished for my summer marathon. The only game added to the list this month - Panzer Dragoon Orta - was also a summer games addition, and being quite short, should definitely be off the list next month. In addition, I aim to get DuckTales off of the list too, as it's the last month of the challenge, with Monster World IV and Metroid Prime 3 also on my to-do list.

As for that PSP backlog, I'm selling my broken PSP now with the intention of buying a new one, but due to money issues, we'll see what happens with those. They might not be getting finished anytime soon. I'd love to get the rest of this list clear by the end of the year though!

I agree with you guys that 2D Zelda games are better but no mention of either of the Oracle games or Minish Cap? All three were excellent and fun.

I love Minish Cap as well. But the Oracle games just frustrated me with it's puzzlieness. It got me stumped many times and sent me to the walkthrough online, which I don't particularly like to do if I don't have to. I think I'm the ONLY Zelda fan that feels this way about the games, though, because I see nothing but praise for them.

Ocarina of Time is perfect.

Link to the Past is perfected perfect perfection.

I didn't like Minish Cap much at all or the handheld games that followed. The Oracle games were awesome, though I have a soft spot for Link's Awakening.

Darksiders 2 - I hate the save copy lock on the PS3 version I have, especially for a massive undertaking like this game, full of bugs, glitches, etc. that can corrupt a save file that you've put lots of hours into. This is becoming more and more common in PS3 titles. I feel like Sony is EXTORTING people by forcing them to PAY for PSN+ just to back up their save data

I also hate the fifty billion DLC items, pre-order exclusives, collector's edition exclusives, etc. that are out there for this game. Remember when you could buy a game and actually get a FULL product? Not this generation. I'm still pissed that the excellent, Evil Dead inspired Ash Williams outfit in Lollipop Chainsaw is still only available to people who pre-ordered it. Probably the one single thing that I truly hate about that game, the fact that the BEST alternate outfit cannot be purchased or unlocked. Screw pre-order exclusive content. The only way to get a FULL game these days with all available in game content is to pre-order multiple copies of a game, buy the collector's edition, AND buy all the DLC. That makes modern games cost like a hundred dollars or more. Fucking ridiculous. Screw this generation of gaming

I think I need to stick to XBLA and PSN games (like the excellent Dust: An Elysian Tail), indie games, or just go back to retro gaming. Major retail titles this gen just make me sick as they are saturated in corporate greed. Darksiders went from something of a hidden gem, cult hit with the first game to a soulless, sell out, corporate product with its sequel.

I am Alive - This game has BRILLIANT, game changing ideas, but the execution falls a bit short due to poor design choices like the god awful save system. Thumbs up for the ambition this title shows, but its reach extends its grasp. I still recommend people check it out though, but the game requires a lot of patience to get through and a tolerance for some sloppy design and a draconian save system

SSX (2012) - I think this is a great game, but it lacks the charm of SSX Tricky for me. I don't like the new visual style, the new control scheme, the more non-linear track designs, and the annoying survival courses. There's an excellent product here, but I think I was looking for an SSX Tricky 2 and didn't get it. It's vastly different from that PS2 classic

^ I agree and disagree, some games are so great they sometimes NEED DLC to help tide people over ntil they next game (kinda like Arkham city.)
BUT SOMETIMES WITH GREAT GAMES THEY FUCK IT UP. (again Arkham City) I mean like 10% of the is inaccessible unless you buy the game new! You can't play as catwoman (part of the FUCKING STORY MODE.) unless you pay another 10$.

My list would be pretty huge if I covered all the games I own but haven't finished, so I'll just cover the fairly recently purchased ones:

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - After playing the demo for this game I was extremely excited about the final product. I even played through the demo 3 times to experience it as each of the 3 classes. When I started playing the retail copy, I was buried under infinite amounts of worthless loot and boring side quests. I couldn't even remember what the main quest was about. I shelved it for now, but might return to it later on.

Xenoblade - I stopped playing this for sort of the same reason as Reckoning; side quest fatigue. There was just too many people asking me to do the most mundane activities. At least Xenoblade handles them much better by not allowing you to backtrack and hand them in (they auto-complete when the requirements are met). They're also a lot easier to filter out of your quest log. I recently picked this one back up and decided I would just ignore the side quests, so I'll probably finish this one soon.

Dark Souls - I got stuck on a boss and it was becoming way too stressful. I'll return to this before the end of the year, though. I love it.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City - I hate it, it sucks. But I'm holding onto my copy in case a friend wants to have a drunken late-night game session.

Asura's Wrath - Just haven't gotten around to playing it yet.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection - Saving for a rainy day.

Devil May Cry HD Collection - Rainy day.

Ico/Shadow HD Collection - Rainy day.

Side quests have become the bane of the rpg genre. At least in Bioware games, they dovetail nicely into the story, but in most Japanese rpgs they just feel like time wasting filler and Xenoblade is no different. I also hate how games like Skyrim are essentially ALL about the side quests. The Elder Scrolls games are so bloated with endless side quests and the franchise wears that fact like a badge of honor. It's why I never get into those games. I don't want to play something that's going to take me a year to complete with its two thousand side quests. Like I always say, less is more. You can have side quests as a way to flesh out the story and give players some more game time, but there comes a point where it's...just...too...much. Overkill is a concept lost on most game developers. Hence, the fifty billion riddler trophies in Batman Arkham City, one of the few complaints I had about an otherwise outstanding game.

Loco Roco PSP
Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy PSP
Catrap Game Boy
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions PSP
Scribblenauts DS
Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire GBA
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Wii
Final Fantasy V PS1 Classics

Games on the list: Final Fantasy V, Metroid Prime 3
Games off the list: Panzer Dragoon Orta, DuckTales

Close enough to the end of the month. I broke even this time, with 2 games removed from the list (both being played for the summer games challenge), but two added. FFV is currently in progress, so I expect to beat that in September. Prime 3 was briefly started, but the Wii has since been packed for a move, so I won't be able to play that again until October.

I did get a new PSP now though, so I can whittle down the unbeaten list for that console. I made some big progress in Duodecim this month too, but got bored after playign it for quite some time. I'm probably just over half way, with about 25 hours on the clock.
