Is Ouya the future of gaming?

Post by retrozombieslayer »

As most of you probably already know, there is a new upcoming console called the Ouya. Personally, I think that is better to have more than just three consoles dominating the market. And at a starting price of $99 and a hacker-friendly OS, it seems like a dream come true.

OR IS IT?!

There is one catch-- no physical medium for games. While this may not be a problem for some, it is very disturbing to me and other obsessive collectors. I personally prefer having a game that I can put on my shelf, so I can gaze at it in awe, knowing that I have something to show for the money I just spent. So, is digital download only the future of gaming? Let me hear your Ouya thoughts!
NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Xbox 360, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS Lite, DSi, GB, GBA SP, Dreamcast, and 2600.

News to me! I didn't realize that anything was released after the Dreamcast yet.

It's funny because it's true - Breetai hasn't heard of anything since the Dreamcast came out.

I do have this Playstation 3 thing, but all it seems to do is play downloaded PC Engine, Neo Geo, PS1 and a few Dreamcast games. What's the point of it when I can just play them on their regular systems?

It looks interesting and I may get it to play around with. However, I'm still not too interested in it as of now.

I dont see how it would be the future of gaming, given that the same thing (sort of) has existed on computers for a long time already.
Although I do wish that console games would support (and come with) the same kind of modding tools as many PC games (of the past), that way people would be playing current Xbox 360 and PS3 games 5 years from now. But I guess that's exactly the reason why we'll probably never see it happening. It wouldn't have to be anything game altering (new graphics engine etc), just the ability make your own maps and game modes, import character models and so on.

There is actually a much larger "catch" in the eyes of a publisher. How do you make money "selling" games for a system that actively promotes being hacked/rooted/free? One glance at sales figures for the Android marketplace should be enough to convince anyone seriously interested in making money to avoid this like the plague.
