I actually made it through most of that article and I'm not sure why. I guess I was interested in just how little I care about anything he was saying. I've always felt nolans movies were missing something, but nothing he wrote is the answer to that. Maybe it isn't meant to be and I just went in with preconceived notions because of the pic you posted with the link.Pulsar_t wrote:http://www.davidbordwell.net/blog/2012/ ... -vs-nolan/

The pic made it sound like it was going to be some ranty nolan-bashing article, when it really wasn't at all. I thought it was a pretty cool read, personally.Jrecee wrote: I actually made it through most of that article and I'm not sure why. I like Nolan, but I've always thought the BEST DIRECTOR OF OUR TIME stuff was kinda odd. Seems like Coen Brothers or something would deserve that sort of title over Nolan.

I'm not a film major nor would even call myself film buff. But I do enjoy movies. And I know for a fact that Nolan's movies thoroughly entertained me, after multiple watches still. So in my book, he's a great film maker.

Considering Hollywood has officially become intellectually bankrupt, Nolan is the last thing I am complaining about.. he is still a good entertainer, and summer has always a place for over-the-top blockbusters that aren't utterly stupid.

Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale
Here's a movie that's about as long as a book
I wouldn't recommend this unless you have the stamina for it, otherwise don't bother.

Just watched "The First Time". Pretty good movie. Story of the goofy freshman getting with the hot senior girl. It takes it pretty lightly and realistically, and I was surprised they actually caught the awkwardness well enough.
It kinda reminds me of my freshman year, except I didn't get the girl, got kicked in the balls, and didn't get any action.

Wow the mockbuster for Hills Have Eyes was awfull. Hell the god awfull Hills have Eyes II was better than this.
Boring and predictable, but not in a good way.

The Seasoning House
Rosie Day does well in the lead role, her character, subdued and distant in the beginning, shows signs of life as she recalls memories of her family, slowly bonds with one of the prostitutes who fortuitously knows sign language, and eventually comes to her aid as she suffers horrifically at the hands of one of Goran's men, the monstrous Ivan, while Goran himself is a fittingly cruel and tenacious main villain. The savage scenes of rape in the first half are offset by the brutal acts of revenge and survival in the second, each accompanied, as you would expect, by some great visual effects, but while the film is engaging throughout and comes to a satisfying conclusion, it felt slightly disjointed and meandered in places. However, that doesn't ever detract from the overall tone of the film, darkly foreboding and laced with a palpable sense of menace, it's a tense and disturbing ride.
In the directorial début of special effects guru Paul Hyett, young actress Rosie Day plays Angel, a deaf and mute girl who sees her family brutally murdered before she is dragged to the eponymous Seasoning House, where kidnapped girls are forced to into prostitution for soldiers of a bleak and senseless Balkan war. The first half of the film has a very dream-like quality to it, as Angel, who is enslaved to care for the prostituted girls, performs her daily routine of doping the victims, and then cleaning them up after they have suffered the soldiers often disturbingly brutal attentions. Hyett has said he was heavily influenced by Pan's Labyrinth, and it certainly shows in this half as Angel silently wanders the seasoning house and we glimpse the world as she senses, or more accurately, doesn't sense it. But when ruthless soldier Goran, played by Sean Pertwee, and his men arrive on the scene, the same soldiers responsible for murdering Angel's family, she takes drastic action and the film swerves from darkly depressing, to a taut, tense and brutal game of cat and mouse.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
While on vacation last week, I saw "The Fighter"

Good movie. Watched it on Netflix. My in-laws recently got a blu-ray player, LCD TV, 2.1 sound controller. This tech is too complicated for them. I've tried numerous times to explain how it works but they will never get it.
I bought them a Harmony 650 remote so that with 1 button, they can turn on the components and get the right inputs selected. I also signed them up for a 30-day trial of Netflix streaming which they seem to like.
"The Fighter" was one of the movies we watched on Netflix. I don't watch boxing at all but I found myself enjoying the boxing matches in the movie. It's a story about Micky Ward, a boxer from Lowell, MA which is a nearby town. He had stopped boxing because of a hand injury. His half-brother convinced him to return to boxing and he eventually won the title championship against Shea Neary. Mark Wahlberg did an excellent acting job.

THE MASTER
When this is released on blu-ray, the jewel case will tout "Multiple Oscar Award Wining". This had to be written with the goal to rack up awards. I'm trying to think of a movie to compare it to, but I'm drawing a blank so far. I also know it is a phenomenal movie, but I don't know exactly why. And to be honest, I didn't pick up on everything it put down.
It's hard to recommend a movie you really enjoyed, but don't know why. I'll put it this way, I'm seeing again over the weekend.
PREMIUM RUSH
Oddly enough, this is one of the best action movies of the year. Hard to believe there are more thrilling action sequences in a cycling movie than there were in a Batman movie. Great performances, a somewhat familiar story, but still fresh.
One issue I had with the movie is that is go go go, and then comes to screeching halts for flashbacks. Messes with the pace, big time. But other than that, it was a lot better than I expected. A lot better.

While watching another shitty Angels-Red Sox game last night, I saw the trailer for this movie. Looks good. Seems to be about a bicycle messenger. I can't imagine riding a bike with no brakes, single gear. Wow, that's hard-core.Luke wrote: PREMIUM RUSH
