Games based on themes/vibe

Post by RCBH928 »

Excuse my lack of vocabulary...

I was viewing wrestling videos on youtube only when I stumbled on this WCW title screen. I couldn't help the nostalgia and effect.

I really got that vibe or atmosphere of the 80's view of the dark cities at night. Older guys will know(I guess most of us). Back in the 80's (or earlier) there were many shows and games based on this "theme". Maybe Batman(1989) and The Warriors.

I was wondering if you would like to join this discussion about games that would fit into this criteria .I remembers some beat-em ups fit this"theme" (at least some stages) but I feel this game, City Connection fits this criteria :

I'll have to think about it. I'm dying to play City Connection now though. I haven't even thought about that game in years! 8)

I thought more people will be interested in the topic since so many of you discuss videogames+culture here.

Even I the OP can't figure out much games. But I think I found one. I think we can argue that Final Fight Westside level fits this criteria.

Streets of Rage has the 80s street vibe.

Einhander's first level is at night. Around 1:45 there are a bunch of neon signs. The video is choppier than the game is, but you'll get the idea.

Soukyugurentai has a nice nighttime flyover with all the street lights for the first level too. Jump to 1:15

Great addition, Hobie, your videogames knowledge must be vast. I am not so sure about Soukyugurentai though, it has a city part but looks like the setting is in space . I couldn't figure out the background that well

Games off the top of my head that have a 80's gritty, dark night feel/level to them:

Vigilante sms
Renegade nes
Double Dragon series
NARC nes
Shatterhand nes

Ah, City Connection. The first time I played that game was at the Shirokiya Department Store in Honolulu, Hawaii back in 1988. I remember it vividly despite being a mere zygote.

A little off topic, but this thread totally reminds me of this:

I still love the SNES Sim City title screen. The scrolling buildings, the music, all go together nicely.

Every time I glance over this topic I think it says "Games based on themselves".

Yeah, most of that game doesn't fit, but the first level is very much like flying over a city at night. Jump to 5 minutes in this video.

A lot of these it is just certain levels that are in the city at night.

Actually that title screen fits the criteria exactly!! The gameplay not so much , but none the less the music fits in . I have seen a gameplay video on youtube. I didn't expect SimCity to be one of those games.

I guess back in the late 80's early 90's that theme was so popular even SimCity got its treatment :D
