Saturn Modchip and Guardian Heroes

Post by velvet »

Probably unlike many other posters that run to the forums when they have a problem, I'm running to run to the forums for a different reason.

I couldn't be happier with the modchip! It arrived superfast, as I ordered Friday morning, and received the chip Tuesday, and this was over LABOR DAY WEEKEND, which for those of you in other territories meant no mail on Monday. Spectacular.

I had never soldered before last night, but borrowed a kit from my gf's dad and had at it. I first tried using his newer & nicer looking Coleman ColdHeat thing, which practically instantly melts the solder once it makes a complete electrical circuit across the tip. I'll shorten the story and just say that using it wasn't a good idea.

I got out the more traditional iron and fixed my mistakes, and got it right on the first try! I'll cut all the bs as soldering isn't exciting, I'd just like to note that for a beginner it was hard to figure out soldering the power wire into that space. I did my best and it doesn't look like the solder connection I have on the A-B part of the chip, its just a clear substance but it's holding the power wire in place. Also note that I did have to file down the chip to fit, as it says in the instructions, and using a nail file worked just fine. I did not tape down the ribbon as it was firmly in place without tape when I first opened the case, and to tape it afterwards would mean fighting the natural upward curve it has. It's secure in the chip and I don't regularly try to use the Saturn as a maraca.

The important part is that it works, and thanks to the "top games nobody played" article I chose Guardian Heroes for the test run. Happy to say it worked flawlessly, and what's more is I quite enjoyed the game! Although I wasn't looking to play for very long so I didn't make it to any save point. Fun, though.

Many thanks Racketboy! I'm looking forward to hanging around the forums and discovering the many gems I never had growing up.

Never ever use those ColdHeat things. I've got one here as a gift and I've never been able to use it. It's a terrible concept.
