Good condition Dreamcast game won't work

Post by TheBrick »

I bought a copy of Crazy Taxi last week. I put the disc in my Dreamcast, turn it on, the startup jingle plays, the sega logo comes up... then the console goes straight to its main menu. So, I move the curser to the dreamcast controller, hit A, the Sega logo comes up again... and I'm back at the console menu. I tried cleaning the lens with a q-tip, in case of dust or something. I tried wiping off the disc, in case it was fingerprints. I try putting the disc in again... Same thing happens. And the sad part is, it's the second-best condition disc in my Dreamcast collection. RE: Veronica is far worse, and yet it boots up. Anyone know what's going on here?

Dreamcasts do tend to have a lot of problems with the laser. There are a lot of guides out there on how to adjust the potentiometer on it to bump power output, or it may just need to be cleaned.

Or something else entirely, I dunno. I had similar problems with certain games on mine though.

@TheBrick: a few questions before any suggestions are given to help your dilema.

The game
- I assume the game preowned? Is it a standard release Carzy taxi or Sega All Stars release?
- Any idea if the disc has been resurfaced or buffed? (this may be the cause of your trouble)

The hardware
- Does your console experience this problem with other retail G-R discs you own?
- What model DC do you own? Rev 0, 1, or 2 (you can see for yourself on the silver sticker placed underneath the unit. You will find a cicled single digit number on the lower right)
- Can you actually hear the disc spinning as the unit tries to read the game?

It's probably the game and not the Dreamcast. My copy of Sonic Adventure, which I bought brand new when it was first released, isn't scratched in the slightest but it takes multiple tries to get it to work on any Dreamcast while all other games work flawlessly, even beaten up ones.

I have no idea what its problem is either. It works if I try enough times though.

Indeed. I ended up with a Sonic Adventure that worked fine for me and looked flawless. I sold it to another Racketeer and they couldn't get it to work at all. They passed it on again, but I don't know if it worked for the next guy.

Its been stated before here on racketboy by a few members (myself included) that many launch release titles were pressed on Faulty GD-rom Media. Sega themselves back in the day even made this public, apologizing and making ammends by offering replacement copies via telephone hotline.

Indeed. My first copy of Sonic Adventure that I got on launch day was pressed on faulty media. Took it back to the store, and they replaced it with a re-issued copy that hasn't quit on me yet.

Crazy Taxi was released quite a bit after launch, though. Did they still press on faulty GD-roms as late as 2000?

I was wondering if it was something like that. I had no idea. Thanks for the information.

No problem. Glad I could help.

My faulty media comment was meant for members like Cookie who have games like MVC1 and Sonic Adventure. These type of games are perfect candindates for faulty GD-rom causing disc read errors. And considering how huge the launch lineup was for the Dreamcast, there is a lot. Of reason to proceed with caution when purchasing those games. With Crazy Taxi (particularly the one OP owns), I have a feeling his problem lies in a resurfaced disc. GD-R MEDIA doesn't respond well to resurfacing for the most part.
