corrupted graphics in ff3 for snes

Post by 8bitForLife »

Ya I was playing last night on my new ff3 I just got in the mail and I noticed the ocean in the game was corrupted. So I proceeded to clean the game and snes and even wiped the memory and played up to were there was ocean again and it was still corrupted.

Now my question is can a game go bad and stop working like that or is my snes dieing.
I read that the video ram is dieing or died and its probably a new time to get a new snes. Or should I send the game back.

All other games work the ff3 worked just the ocean as I could see was corrupted I hadn't played further. I tested tmnt4 contra among others all worked fine.

What should I do?

How was it corrupted? Can you take a picture of it?

instead of the blue moving ocean it looked like sand kind of yellowish. It was still animated.

The game has weird art direction. Anything you can walk through, is not real ocean.

Did you post about some other SNES video weirdness the other week, or was that someone else?

Nope, just couldn't remember who asked about graphical weirdness recently.

Someone sent me a Super Mario RPG cart that starts off fine but dived into a mess of corrupted graphics and finally freezes during the intro. I've also read several other threads on Assemblergames and Digital Press of people having these same issues. While maskrom is difficult to damage I'm starting to suspect people are starting to find cartridges with damage.

The only real fix would be to swap the mask rom for flash/EPROM and even then that has a finite life cycle (though well beyond any of our grandchildren likely having long been dead). OTOH you can always rewrite flash and EPROMs once bitrot starts to take place. The obvious problem here is that anyone cracking the cart open will see what looks like a "reproduction" and call foul.

Possible solution? Leave the original mask rom in place and wire the replacement in place.

The only real evidence I have for this at the moment is a dead Genesis cart that wouldn't work but as soon as I swapped an EPROM onto the PCB it booted up just fine. The PCB wasn't damaged in the least but the mask rom took a lovely dive at some point.

well i got my snes today and the game plays fine so it wasnt my ff3 at all It was one of the chips on the snes dieing. This one still has the vertical line but i can only see it in ff3 which i read is the worst culprit for it. I tried seeing t in other games but didnt. But all i have to test is composite.

I got a scart cable from play-asia.com and i need to get a converter to component to see if it would show up there. Luckly my tv can display 240
