computer help needed

Post by ubelaffe »

Hey guys, my laptop if fubar. I'm having to type this up at work.

I'm running xp. I've never had any problems in the past and I've kept up to date with my virus protection, but I can't even open internet explorer. I don't have another browser application either. It's to the point now, where I can't even open my computer or my documents. It's also really slow all of a sudden. When I did finally manage to get to control panel, I couldn't erase temp files or anything, because it would come up as not responding.

I don't have any boot disks. I don't have a way to get online with that computer. It's sort of a sitting duck. Any and all help would be appreciated as always.

Try running it in safe mode with networking. When you turn the computer, hit F8 right after the BIOS screen (boot screen)...right before the windows xp "loading" screen comes up.

Hopefully you should be able to run things and get on the internet to maybe get some spyware programs or w/e. If it's still running slow in safe mode, then you might have a hardware problem...what did you do (if anything) right before it started acting up?

Btw, what part of SC are you from?

I haven't added any hardware. I've downloaded some music torrents, but I'm not sure if the problem was present before or after that.

I've tried running in safemode with networking, but it won't detect my wireless card. I'll try and hook it up over lan in safe mode with networking.

I'm in columbia

If you can get online with Safe Mode, run a scan on here:

I use trendmicro for my regular stuff, but I'm worried that it might be messed up on my pc.

Thanks for the link.

Are you at all familiar with restore points? You might try reloading to an old point. Hopefully that will work.

If you use ctr alt delete and check your processes, there may be an svchost opperation that's using your entire processor.

that's another thing, the task manager doesn't show any applications running, but I'll look for something like that. Also, the % graph doesn't show that I'm maxing out my computer's abilities, so that doesn't make any sense...what with it running slowly.

Processes are under a different tab from applications, but now I think it's very unlikely that an svchost is causing the problem.
