ntsc console on pal tv

Post by Profanum »

Seeing as though many games im after such as many squaresofts and the lunars etc never had a pal release im considering buying a ntsc ps3 to be able to play them alongside all ps3 games i can buy here in Australia having no region protection. However my question is will my tv being a relatively old one be able to work with an ntsc console?

Assuming you don't have the manual, search for the model number online or poke around in any setup menus to see if there's mention of NTSC support.

if it turns out your television doesn't support NTSC, there is always the option of buying a converter box for that, sometimes you can find what you need for a reasonable price, but some of those boxes can get a bit pricey.

It would more than likely be cheaper to go to a pawn shop or a thrift store and find a newer CRT that supports both NTSC/PAL

This. I too dealt with PAL issues and my NTSC consoles in Europe and damn, it was a f'n pain about 20 years ago. Thankfully there are TVs that do both now (for a while actually I think).

My family had one in the mid/late 80s when I lived in Italy and England.

I guess my grandparents never bothered to get a dual one.

I had this problem a good few years back with my u.s. snes and jap megadrive, you can pick up PAL to NTSC / NTSC to PAL converters on ebay with not too much of a dent in your wallet. i used to use 1 very similar to this one

do you have access to a Playstation 2? that console outputs all 60hz games in ntsc color unless hacked otherwise. including pal releases.

Sega Nomad is another option to test compatibility if you'd rather not import a whole console. It even outputs rgb scart, very rare feature in portables, despite not released pal.
Lum fan.
