It would be much better than their feeble attempts at a 3D Sonic game.

Also, I've been having dreams of a "lost" Sonic game for the Genesis. It's basically similar to the later games (Sonic 3 and Knuckles), and the background is a mountain-like setting. And the ground is a pale green (grassy area?) and Sonic is trying to stop a typical Robotnik boss battle.

Also, if anyone is looking to collaborate with me on a Sonic game, I can make up for my lack of tech skills with my wealth of ideas. I'll start another topic for it, though.

Take a quick look at sonicretro or any other Sonic community places. 99% of their projects are never finished. There's even a new project tentatively called Sonic 4, and even that appears prone to fail. Sonic has been plagued since Xtreme so don't expect anything stellar ever again. If Saxman (who is behind ProSonic) perfects his engine for total beginners then you can expect interesting fangames with frightening authenticity. Hopefully.

Three words: Sonic 1 Megamix

You won't even THINK about it as a hacked version of Sonic 1.
