Inconsistancies with SNES box layout

Post by Flodder450 »

Hello,
I noticed the following , SNES boxes, or atleast here in PAL-land, dont have a consistent box-art layout as the N64 does, let me show you a pic of my SNES and N64 boxes:
Image
While the N64 boxes keep to a nice set layout, the SNES boxes's layouts seem to be all over the place!

Does anyone know why they did this? also, how do USA SNES boxes look like?

I have insomnia so this may be lack of sleep talking but I think most boxes look similar to DKC box.

Intresting i never really noticed that before maybe it had to do with different people working on the box art.

Europe has lots of regions and languages. I think there are carts in other languages.

Maybe there was no quality control over which factory made what game with boxart?

Were games released simultaniously over all regions or did one area get one game before the other?

I belive this happened with NES games too. Some companies made similar box art but they are all over the place as well.

The N64 game you have there as well do have some slight differences. The n64 logo is in the right place but Rare put their logo as well. And some just say NINTENDO 64.

thats my two cents!

Most of them look like your DKC3 box, but some have the name/logo centered.

Here's a picture of some of mine to give you an example:

That's a nice row :)

Well, i looked a bit closer and found out that the Asterix & Obelix box is from Germany, and that the The Smurfs's box is a French/Dutch version, though they have the same box layout!

As Harper poined out, US spines were pretty hit or miss, though apparently a bit more consistent than your examples of European games (ignoring the 3 Sfami games and the universal case). They're black and the tops have the red stripe that continues from the front (except when they forget like Gradius III there). Sometimes there's the grey button thing, sometimes there isn't.

The fronts are a lot more consistent though. Black with the artwork shoved up and left. SNES logo at the bottom leading to a red bar that folds onto the bottom spine as well as the one at the top. Grey button thing in the bottom right, though the Doom Troopers one is very small for some reason. "Seal of Quality" in the bottom left up until ratings took that spot like the T for Teen on Doom Troopers. Yellow dots and a purple bar that carried over the edge on the right hand side.

AFAIK, as long as you had the required info, ratings, seal, SNES logo &/or name, I think most game companies could do as they wanted for the most part.

(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

Super Famicom game boxes seem much worse. They seem completely random. For example, the left side usually has the game title, but often it just says "Super Famicom." Sometimes the titles face left, sometimes they face right. Sometimes it says both "Super Famicom" plus the game title, sometimes only one or the other. You can't just line them up with the left side facing outwards on a shelf and have a uniform row of games in which you can see the game's title. No, that would be way too convenient. Instead, they are haphazard. It bothers me, maybe because I'm OCD or something.

Indeed, there are 3 SFami boxes in my picture. Two of them have Super Famicom and the Japanese text on them, the other does not.
