I've only played the game on PSP but I dont think there was anything fascinating in the story of that game  Lenneth did not have a personality, the characters you met along the way didn't seem to have much connection to the central plot of the game and what ever backstory and personality they were given, didn't really reflect on their actions once you recruited them. The guy with the huge sword you get from the beginning and the young wizard who killed his own teacher were the only characters with an intresting backstory in my opinnion. Even the central plot felt very distant, there's a war going on but it doesn't really affect the player in anyway. Once in a while you met with Freya (?) and got to see how the people you've sent to Odin have been doing in battle, but other than that, I didnt really think about the war at all.
And the "normal ending"? "Good job, you can go away now, we'll call you when we need you again". Ok, Half Life did the same thing but in a lot more intresting manner.

Oh and any exploring places did not really give you much insight to what was happening on the larger scale of things. Most villages and towns had 3-5 NPCs, most of whom said nothing of value to the player. Atleast there was the flower place with the cutscene (some how related to the secret/best ending I assume?) and the vampire's castle, but I sadly tried to fight him before I was strong enough and got my ass handed to me, so I couldn't recruit him in my party

Yeah, sorry. I knew what you meant, I'm just a bit of a stickler for details sometimes.

I actually don't care for Luca Blight as much as most do. I think he's a decent antagonist, but I find him to be slightly one-dimensional. (Not as bad as Sephiroth, and at least there's a reason for Luca's madness.) I think it's undeniable that the midway-point in Suikoden II is one of the greatest scenes in the series, and maybe even RPGs, though.

I completely agree with you. One really great thing about Suikoden (the first two at least) is that it didn't feel the need to create some arbitrarily godly threat to the world/galaxy/universe, that you have to stop, in order to create a compelling and engaging story.

Yup. I remember paying close to 4000 Belgian franks for it back then, which is close to €100.

For me this was an 'import' game.

Didn't know there was a PAL version until years later.
Are we talking just the PAL version here? 'Cause I bought the NA version at release for about $40, I think, and again three years later for $20. I don't think it really got its collector's price tag until the mid-2000s.

This thread has really made me want to play the trilogy again. I still need to play through Gensou Suikogaiden II also.

I guess it's probably more like "sue-ee-ko-den", with no "w" sound.

In actual speech it should sound closer to this.
Really, it's four syllables (technically five) with the first two sounding almost like one.
Emphasis is on the 'ee.'

Nope, US version. Over 10 years ago, no internet, and only one import shop near me. It's not like I had much choice...

I did find the PAL version for 10 euro a few years later though... ^^
