Capture card suggestions?
Capture card suggestions?
I've been looking into capture cards I need to record some videos, preferably external ones. I will record mainly older systems so HD cards optimized for current gen games is not needed, I already use fraps for current gem games on PC anyway. I was deciding between the popular Roxio card sold in gamestop because it looks very simple to use, but the Pinnacle Dazzle platinum has s-video input as well as composite unlike the Roxio. The downside is that the Dazzle seems to have quality control issues.. Are there any others I should look into, and what cards do you use? Thanks.
Re: Capture card suggestions?
I use a BT8X8 card - ATI TV Wonder with the BTWincap video driver (98, XP, and 2K only...)
Here's a list of cards with the BT8x8 chip in them..
I've managed to get some really clean s-video captures using the right settings and capture program - Here's some pics I got of Castlevania NITM for Saturn @ The Castlevania Dungeon - if you zoom in on the numbers at the top-left, or red areas, you can see the shadowing and dot crawl, but that's just a limitation of the s-video signal.
The TV Wonder has served me well for many years, and with that tweaked driver it's compatable with all the best viewing and capture programs, even with ffdshow chained into it's capture for realtime image pre-processing.
There's an old thread here on the subject.
I've heard the Micomsoft 500N1 is the best for retro games since it can capture Scart RGB 15khz as well as mostly everything else.

Sounds like it might be overkill, but I've been really happy with this guy:

Below is a Component video capture I had done from the Xbox 360:

Re: Capture card suggestions?
The better bang for your buck capture you're going to get is with a dedicated hardware PVR. They're not much more than normal capture cards (~$100-$120). And, the computer would just need to capture the incoming stream.
You could also use the same sort of system to better capture PC gameplay also without the fraps slowdown.
