If Sega Neptune could be found in the wild, I'd probably have one by now.
:)

I believe that was from the Classic Gaming Expo in Vegas or LA, wherever it was held that year. Most of those items are from people's collections, but this was probably from Sega or someone very close to Sega.

That's about the coolest game related pic I've ever seen. Like something out of my 1996 senior in highschool study hall dreams.

That is an awsome looking console indeed. I wish Sega would have released this version instead of the Genesis model 3. Imagine if they made the Saturn with backwards compatibility to play Sega CD games and Genesis/32X games where the memory slot currently is. How sweet that would have been.

At the time there was still the stigma that backward compatibility would kill a system, mostly from the Atari 7800's compatibility w/ 2600 titles. This was really dumb logic since the 7800 was NOWHERE near the NES and SMS in what it could do and it's software library, that was why it failed. Plus the PS2 did great and now 100% of new consoles will be backward compitble. Look at all the incarnations of Gameboy and how BC has helped them. I remember being dissappointed when i found out the Saturn cart slot wasn't for cart games.

I think that this may slow, as with each passing generation the consoles are becoming more advanced in their design. Take the ammount of trouble m$ have emulating the xbox on the 360, can you emagine emulating the 360 with its 3 dual cores and getting them synched when later games fully exploit this technology. And the ps4 may suffer at this hand as well as they are using and nvidia chip and have 7 spe's to deal with next time.... it will be very costly to make the ps4 house a psx,ps2, and ps3 before they even think about their new chipsets....

I'm seriously thinking about making my own Neptune clone..

Consists of a Genesis two motherboard, permanently connected to a 32X, with the circuit laid out in a way, it's still quite small and flat.. (the 32x has two boards, one tilted 90 degrees, but it's only linked by some last minute engineering change wires, and ribbons (the famous ribbons)

I've seen that picture before and read it was an empty shell.
