Impossible to watch a youtube game vid without commentary?

I think I've ranted about this on this forum before, but man is it getting on my nerves. Any time I get curious about a game and want to see it in action on youtube, it is damn near impossible to find a gameplay video that doesn't have some idiot talking over it.

I'm not completely opposed to Let's Play style audio commentary videos. Some are quite entertaining, but I hate how EVERYONE does it now. There's pretty much no way to actually hear the dialog, music, and voice acting of a game in youtube vids anymore. All you ever hear is, "hey, I'm some guy. Here's what I think about this game. Here's some lame jokes that aren't funny. Here's me pimping my next audio commentary vid. Here's me basically making this video ALL ABOUT ME and not about the actual game AT ALL."

This is one of those modern day trends that annoys me. I guess it's a generational thing. Everybody wants to be a youtube star now. It's this whole annoying social media craze that makes everyone think they are the next internet celebrity. I just love how a guy will say, "Hey I made this video to show you guys this awesome game." then proceeds to talk about himself or make jokes the whole video making you unable to really follow or listen to anything happening in the game at all.

I tend to agree with your rant above. I have looked for gameplay video of numerous games and all I can get are crappy, uninformative, review style shows. However there are a couple of exceptions for certain platforms. The one that comes to mind immediately is the sega saturn jpn video series that start with T-XXXXX from MadRoms. They do a great job just showcasing the games with no added commentary.

The only youtube channel reviewer I don't ever get tired of is Mark from Classic Game Room. His tried and true formula is the absolute best! I never get tired of his reviews. I will admit CGR Undertow is very hit or miss though.

If it makes you feel any better I've contemplated uploading playthroughs (or maybe just samples) of games with no commentary.

Let's Plays annoy the hell out of me as a general rule. Unless they're very well produced of course, which they never are, because they're Let's Plays, and they're shit.

I completely agree. I can't stand commentary. Another thing that really irks me is when a video is titled "(insert name of game here) gameplay" and the first 5 minutes of the video (or the whole damn thing) is of the intro of the game. I don't want to fucking see that! I want to see how the game plays. THAT IS ALL.

I've had this problem a lot lately, because I've recently decided that I want to work on my PS1 collection. I'm not all that familiar with the PS1 library, so I've been having to do a lot of research and I have a really hard time finding short, to the point videos of just pure gameplay. It's so annoying!

Here's an excellent channel for longplays. The games are played from start to finish flawlessly with TES, so there's no dying, loading etc. Amiga, PC, Mega Drive/Genesis, Sega CD, Wii, PSP, SNES, Xbox, Xbox 360, Dreamcast, Arcade, PS1 etc.

I've never understood that either. How do people not know the difference between gameplay and cut scenes?

For all of you who hate Let's Plays go watch Chuggaconroy. He is funny and he knows his shit. I watched his Earthbound lp and it was the first let's play I've really gotten into.

I agree, though the exception that proves the rule is that I really like Total Biscuit's commentaries.

Another thing that irks me is when people put all of those stupid hotlink tabs all over their youtube video. That has to be the worst feature youtube offers.

Commentary doesn't usually bother me unless the video is specifically called "Game X Gameplay" and someone is speaking over the sound.

If you want to have commentary; fine. Fix the title though. Make the video title "Game X Gameplay with Commentary" so I don't have to waste my time clicking on your video.
