Had one of the worst play-throughs of Sonic CD in years playing the HD release. I just could not catch a break, and I don't know if I should fault the controls, or a higher frame rate in sections, or just a deterioration in my skills. Despite making it into more than enough of the special stages, I was only able to get the first time stone. For a long time I absolutely hated the special stages in Sonic CD, but one day they just clicked and I didn't have an issue with them. Playing this re-release brought back the pain and misery of playing those special stages for me, though. I also got stuck, literally, with nowhere to go in Stardust Speedway when I switched from past to present; enclosed entirely by platforms with two red springs and a loop at the top. I had to wait for the timer to run out and kill me. I've never had anything like that happen to me before in Sonic CD, but that could definitely lend credence to the argument that Sonic CD has some less than stellar level design.
I'll be putting some more time into the game later for the achievements and extras I'm sure. Hopefully the game is a little more kind to me then.

When I first got Bakumatsu Roman I fiddled around with it a little, and thought it felt like a fantastic fighter. I decided to try to get a bit more into it, but only really made it through an arcade run with Hibiki. I'm sure I just need practice, but when I got to that pink yukata wearing bastard I nearly had a friggin' conniption fit. Must have lost at least 30 times to him. It seemed like every single move of his had priority over mine. I couldn't even keep him from running into me to grab me, then I'd be thrown into the corner, and 1/3 the time he'd get in a down hit before I could roll out. Then I'd get Senzai Ougi-ed just for good measure. (I hate that pink bastard so much!)
I also went through the Hanafuda mode, which was very fun for me. I love koi-koi, and the computer wasn't so stupidly lucky that the fun was taken out of it.

Don't have a lot to say about Mario Galaxy. The controls are often infuriating to me when upside-down, partly because the camera angle for those sections is horribly disorienting. Also REALLY hate the swimming sections. You have to have options to reverse directional controls like that. Those options just have to be there.
Otherwise the game is just so blase to me. It's fine, but not even my love of astrophysics and astronomy was able to assist in my enjoyment of it. (Actually probably hindered my enjoyment more than anything.)
Not sure whether to sink more of my time into completing it or just stop with Mario altogether. I hear a lot of people like Galaxy 2 better, but other than Sunshine, I think 3D Mario just really isn't my thing.

Spec Ops turned out to be a great game. The gameplay is your basic third-person cover-based shooter, but the controls are solid and responsive. The weapons feel good, and there are a lot to choose from. Enemy AI seemed smarter than usual as well; using cover, communicating with each other and trying to flank me. I also had basic control over my squad mates, giving me a bit more versatility in my tactics.

What I really liked about it, though, was the story and the writing. It was very interesting, and the character development was great for being your basic action game. The characters actually expressed emotion, and seemed morally conflicted about what they were doing in the game. I actually came to care about the characters by the end.

If you're curious but don't feel like playing, the whole thing is up on my YouTube channel for your viewing pleasure. The sound kinda sucks, though.

totally agree with you on the 3D mario games. find them to be so dull. have you tried mario 3d? you can skip galaxy 2, but mario 3d is more worthwhile.

Nice to know I'm not alone anyway. :D

I played Mario 3d Land briefly in a store not too long ago, but I only invested two minutes or so into it. I don't have a 3ds anyway, but if I end up getting one, I'll keep an open mind on 3D Land. I've heard it's extremely short, though. Any truth to that?

2011 Games Beaten
2010 Games Beaten

I tried the original IB back when it went on sale in April and played one "life" and thought it was kinda meh and just not my style of game. I recently picked up the sequel on sale for $3 since it was supposedly better, but decided to revisit the original first.

I am glad I did, as I couldn't put it down the second time I tried it. Something about the game just clicked, so much so that I finished it and the even-better-holy-shit-this-game-is-awesome sequel in two days. The main playthrough of the second one is easily 3-4 times as long as the first game, but even the first is worth revisiting for the few hours it offers. If you've at all been on the fence about these games or had an inkling of curiosity, just make the jump and pick them up! (Note, I played these on an iPad 2...I imagine they might be slightly less fun on a phone).

Games Finished 2012:

1. SMA3: Yoshi's Island (GBA)
2. Donkey Kong Country 2 (GBA)
3. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
4. Donkey Kong Country 3 (GBA)
5. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition (PS3)
6. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (PS3)
7. Rayman Origins (PS3)
8. SMA4: Super Mario Bros. 3 (GBA)
9. Little Big Planet 2 (PS3)
10. Pokemon Colosseum (GCN)
11. Waku Waku 7 (PS2)
12. Super Gem Fighters: Mini Mix (PS2)
13: Street Fighter X Tekken (PS3)
14. King of Fighters XIII (PS3)
15. King of Fighters EX: NeoBlood (GBA)
16. King of Fighters: Neowave (PS2)
17. Pokemon Gold (GBC)
18. Pokemon Ruby (GBA)
19. Dragon Warrior Monsters (GBC)
20. Darius Gaiden (PS2)
21. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
22. Tiny Toon Adventures (NES)
23. Tiny Toon Adventures 2: Trouble in Wackyland (NES)

The two piqued my interest when I heard they were pretty playable SMB3 clones, if not a little simple, and they were. Doesn't hurt I like Tiny Toons. Mind, they have these odd, numerous rock-difficulty spikes, such as the enemy position in the last levels of the first game, where you slide through spikes avoiding an enemy coming the other way, that isn't visible 'til you come through the other side. So it's essentially pot-luck getting away with it, I feel.

Oh, and the bumper-car levels in the second game is the quintessence of tedium. I think if they mesh these two games together into a single fully competent game, we'd have a bit more of a gem on our hands.

Anyways, if you see these on the cheap and have some time to kill in the evening, they're pretty breezy, enjoyable platformers.

I need to get more Z-axes in my games.

I had Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure on the Genesis as a kid, and while it's also a pretty good game, the only reason I owned it was because a friend of mine had Buster Busts Loose on the SNES, which I loved playing at his house any chance I could get. (Too bad he always wanted to play Ken Griffy Jr....)

If you haven't played either of those games, I'd recommend them. Probably more Buster Busts Loose than the other, though.
