What games have multiple methods for achieving one goal?
What games have multiple methods for achieving one goal?
A game like Deus Ex or Deus Ex: Human Revolution allows you to achieve your mission objective through a variety of methods: you may use stealth, hacking, marksmanship, melee fighting, etc. What are some other games out there that have multiple methods through which you can achieve the same goal?

I can't think of any, but I've always wanted to see more games do this. I think it would be cool to have a game with multiple playable characters, who each represent a certain style of play. Do you pick the badass and gun your way through the stage, or pick the stealthy spy? If you ever watch Burn Notice, they always decide on a goal in that show and then bounce around ideas on how to accomplish, and it usually can encompass any number of things from stealth, action, driving, blowing shit up, melee combat, shoot outs, etc.J T wrote:A game like Deus Ex or Deus Ex: Human Revolution allows you to achieve your mission objective through a variety of methods: you may use stealth, hacking, marksmanship, melee fighting, etc. What are some other games out there that have multiple methods through which you can achieve the same goal?

The Elder Scrolls games and Fallout series immediately come to mind for me.

The Thief games, hands down.

Mega Man series. Each level has one boss and many, many possible solutions.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

FarCry 2 comes to mind. So I want to assault X position, what weapon do I want to use and why? Should I assault from the road, the wilderness, a nearby mountain top, or the open prairie? Should I shoot flaming barrels and cause a fire? Should I drive in with a jeep, guns blazing? Should I bring a merc buddy? What happens if my malaria kicks in during the assault? Do I even want to assault the position at all, or just rush on through like nobody's business?
