Which Model of the Genesis is the best?
Re: Which Model of the Genesis is the best?
That's odd, even with an original Genesis 1 Mono Composite cable or RF? I remember trying a Stereo Composite cable on my Genesis 1 and the audio being screwed up, but I don't remember having that problem with RF (memory only) or Mono cables.
Re: Which Model of the Genesis is the best?
You'll hear sound, but only the right channel. Listen to the first stage of Castle of Illusion in glorious stereo, one of the best platforming games of all time. Notice how fairly early on in the tune you hear a xylophone-like sound come from the left side (assuming you have everything hooked up correctly). Now reset the game and instead listen to it in wimpy mono either through the wimpy original composhit cable (yellow and white plug) or the even wimpier RF. Now the xylophone sounds are gone in that same stage!!
They did eventually fix this as I do have a model 1 that does the proper mixdown, but it has TMSS. But my original model is right channel only. Always has been. I first noticed this on stage 5 of the amazing Thunder Force 2 (the red-colored overhead stage). There's a constant instrument on the left side that I never knew was there until I hooked the console up in stereo a few days after I got the game. Up until that point I figured the headphone jack was simply for headphones, I had no idea the Genesis was actually in stereo. That was an amazing day. Unfortunately the only other game I had, Altered Beast, was entirely in mono, just like many early Neil Diamond songs.

I have a dream, and that dream is: one day I will walk into a Goodwill or Pawn Shop and see a CDX sitting next to other "portable cd players" and buy it for cheap. But for now, it's only a dream.
That dream cost me 30bucks

I always check the DVD player section of Goodwill for a 3DO...one day, one day.

Yeah, a lot of those early games were mono, some of the early Capcom ports sound so good I hardly notice though. It's also good to know that the Mono out on the original Model 1 is that messed up, I haven't used it since I started hooking up the headphone jack to my cruddy HiFi stereo back in the day.

That used to be the case until retrogamecave came along.
I haven't checked if that single Sega Trio adapter they sell is still in stock, but it was probably the best purchase I've made in that regard. It works great without the need for any voltage converters (240v over here) and allowed me to get rid of some of the clutter which you'd inevitably find with three power adapters.

Which Capcom ports? Ghouls n' Ghosts and Forgotten Worlds might be mostly mono, but both definitely have some stereo elements sprinkled about.

I was thinking specifically of Strider and Forgotten Worlds. Ghouls n' Ghosts has some great stereo panning instruments. Both Street Fighters have mono music as well, but they aren't early. I can't think of any '89-90 Capcom ports besides the above of hand.

:'( stop making fun of my composhit cables! Theyre not that bad!

Well, once you go s-video or better (assuming your s-video mod was done well), then yeah, they're not so hot.
Sheath, yeah forgot about Strider. Completely mono!
