NES Max controller mod

Post by fastbilly1 »

I found this guide recently, that I am sure a few of you would get some use out of:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Get-the ... ontroller/

It is taking a 360 replacement thumbstick (stick part not the entire interface) and modding the stick so it fits inside the MAX controllers ring where the slider is. Giving you a decent little thumbstick controller for the NES (with turbo).

I have not done it yet, since I only own one MAX controller, but the next two I find are being modded.

That is a slick mod, looks like the replacement still slides instead of a pivot, but now with a better "grip" of the thumb.

An alternative for Auto Fire, I recently bought a Nintendo four player adapter. I thought the A and B on the adapter were fire buttons, silly me they are select Auto Fire buttons to enable any controller plugged into it.

from the article:

"The nice thing about this, is if you don't like the result in a matter of minutes you can have your original unmodified controller back."

Seems like it would be perfectly easy to just give it a go to see if it's even worth it. It's not irreversible.

Indeed, it's only putting a joystick cap in the space the d-pad is, nothing more. The joystick will not act like a joystick of course as it doesn't need much to move it and make contact, as the joystick cap is over the buttons themselves. You can do the same mod with a normal NES controller if you just adapt the outer case to hold a joystick cap in place.

Genius!!

I have always hated the stupid slider in the MAX. So I tried this out last night. Had an busted PS2 3rd party controller that I used for the stick. It was really easy. Just had to rub the borrowed stick down a bit on some sand paper. Other than that just snap every thing back together. It looks pretty good and it works great. Tried it out with a quick run on Gun.Smoke. Might be the best feeling d-pad I've ever used.

That is a good point. On Friday I took apart an Advantage and realized that it too was simply a Joystick over a dpad. But it does make a controller that few like into something more usable.

I think those NES pads are worth reasonable money on ebay, so if you don't like them, consider selling them!

I like this mod, it's so much easier on your thumb.
