College employee here. Most of the time, things get stolen because folks don't lock their doors. Just keep the door locked and don't throw parties where people you don't know can show up. If you live in a suite with a common room, keep your valuables out of there until you get to know your suitemates - assuming you all agree to keep the suite door locked.

Also make note of the MAC addresses of all your devices (both wired and wireless). In the event that something is stolen, your college's IT department and/or security/police force can probably track it down if it appears somewhere else on the network (and it often does). I've helped in the recovery of a few Xbox 360's and laptops that way.

Trust me, in college, you'll warm up to the idea awfully quick.
Well, hey, you're living in Houghton! That's only 2(ish) hours away from NMU!
That is correct! Maybe I can drive over some weekend to play some games!

In my day and NES was a chick magnet because it brought back some nostalgia and was something they would actually want to play. The N64 is probably the equivalent these days.... ;)

According to the guys who run my local game store, they definitely are. Not too long after they opened up a new store in Gainsville, they told me that they were sending most of their 64 stuff to that store because all that stuff was flying off the shelves and they were having trouble keeping that section stocked.

Probably, during my senior year in 2008 it was already getting that way. NES and Genesis games just drew some odd looks from a lot of kids. Many had the PlayStation and N64 as their first consoles.

I have to agree with Luke - college is for all that cool stuff you couldn't do in high school and shouldn't do as a "responsible" adult.
I also agree with Hobie - don't take any other consoles at first learn the scene. Then decide when you come home for the holidays.

I would take a handheld system so that when you are not being social (notice a theme - GO BE SOCIAL) you have something to play cause you never know where the quiet place to relax will be on campus since the dorm may annoy you.

The only time I gamed in the dorms was watching a dude play Tie Fighter on his pc - yawn. I remember when I was in college someone had a N64 and would bring it down to the main TV in the rec center. That was the best way to play games... or in the arcade in the rec center.

No risk of anybody making off with one of your games after a dorm party and takes up much less space.
This, no one would steal a oXbox, too heavy, plus you can use it as a weapon....

Yeah for me and my roommate and friends, every weekend we did laundry was game day on the big-screen in the rec-room.

Sometimes we'd even get a digital projector from the AV center to play on the walls after dark.

I'll echo a few of the things that have been said. I wouldn't worry about a retro collection, save it for when you're back home or when you get your own place after you've lived in the halls. You'll have NMU's laptop, and plenty of ways to emulate.

However, I had plenty of times where I hit up games on the NMU network. Nothing was quite as enjoyable as getting a bunch of buddies in the hall online and playing some games together. When big games come out, dare I say the Call of Duty, Halo, or other mainstream games, it's fun to go to those midnight releases with some peeps from your hall and then go back and play together.

Even though you won't have as much time for your gaming hobby, you'll still have an hour here and there. Trust me, you need to get involved with some of the fun NMU things in the Fall semester while also not losing sight of your academics. There's Homecoming, people to meet, and lots of fall happenings. Marquette in the fall is absolutely breathtaking once the colors start changing.

PS1 outsold N64 by 3:1 margin so the chances are that they are more likely familiar with the Playstation from their childhoods
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box
