I preordered it myself two or three days ago, getting a blue one. I've paid $50 up front and will pay the remaining $150 + tax on launch day. I figure I'll get Super Mario 3D land to go with it.

Don't worry, you're not missing much; it's mostly a gimmick, the only time where it actually helps with gameplay is flying games/segments.

The 3D works pretty well for Theatrhythm; it really helps to differentiate the note stream from the backgrounds.

Haven't tried it, I'll take your word for it. I do know from Rayman 3D, Pilotwings Resort, Star Fox 64 3D, and KIU that flying games are *much* easier in 3D.

As someone who works in stereoscopic 3D on a daily basis, it is possible to train yourself to better see stereo 3D. I'll have to find the link, but a (I believe a neurologist) thought all her life she had perfect version until she found out couldn't see 3D which led her to find out her depth perception wasnt "normal".

Sometimes I see double images, most of the time I do not. I believe it's just when I have the machine at a bad angle. I just don't see a 3d effect. I think I see some extremely slight added depth, but it may just be my mind fooling me. When I turn the 3d on I see all of the images stretch horizontally. Basically my eyes are seeing both images and turning them into one 2d image.

How often is this effect applied to movies? I know I could see the 3d in "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" way back in the day. However, when I saw Tangled in theaters I couldn't really see any 3d. I thought that it might just be very subtle.

Even with my experience working in 3D, I had eye strain trying to see the 3D on the 3DS. One particular game, Pilot Wings, helped me practice seeing the depth. For example, flying around in first person: instead of looking at your 3DS screen as if it were a flat picture frame, look into it as if you were peering out through a window, focusing on one object in the distance. It took me a few minutes to train my eyes with this concept but learning how really is a rewarding experience.

Yes, there are games where the 3D is just there for the sake of being there, but games like RE:Revelations and Pilot Wings really benefit to the overall experience.

A reviewer from wired.com gets a free 3DSXL sample and here's his review:

I'll give it a shot. I was using RE: Revelations to test the 3DS, by the way.
