Gunstar Heroes - (PSN)
Kidou Senshi Gundam: Renpou vs. Zeon DX - (DC)
Napple Tale: Arsia in Daydream - (DC)

Was playing Gunstar Heroes for Together Retro, and while it's a really good game, I somehow expected to enjoy it more; probably because I've been meaning to really play the game for an extremely long time. Also, it made me want to go back and try to finish Gunstar Super Heroes.

I used to own the US PS2 release of Kidou Senshi Gundam: Renpou vs. Zeon DX, which I didn't realize until picking up this DC version a while back. Honestly I hated the PS2 version, but playing this on the DC with the VGA box and the Arcade Stick is an experience hardly beaten. The dash controls can be a little aggravating in later arcade levels, considering how much you have to depend on it to avoid enemy attacks later on. I guess they just expect you to be able to time your dashes more accurately at that point. This one feels a little archaic compared to Kidou Senshi Gundam VS: Extreme Boost, but in typical Japanese arcade fashion, almost anyone you play against on that machine is going to be soul crushingly good. So I guess Renpou vs Zeon DX is more fun for me. It makes me really sad to see Network Battle options in the main menu of Dreamcast games, these days, though.

Napple Tale is kind of a hard game for me to talk about, partly because I just spent the last few hours grinding the score attack stage for coins to try to complete the card collection, and after pumping at least 5000 coins (10 coins per card/item) the damn gatchapon machine still won't give me the one friggin' card I still need. *grumble*
Anyway, it's a great little artistically inspired game, with a lot of charm, and great atmosphere. Particularly adding to the atmosphere is the incredible score by Kanno Yoko. I probably like the music more than the actual game, really. The game case classifies it as an Action RPG, but I'd call it a platformer with some 'inspiration' from Majora's Mask, really. It's pretty rudimentary stuff though, and it's baby-town frolics from start to finish in terms of difficulty. The story's there, and it's not too bad. Although there aren't really any surprises, and the director/writer fancies himself a poet, but I find him to be just a bit ostentatious. Particularly in the one of the character's diaries that you unlock after beating the game: It feels much more like an excuse to showcase some poetry rather than giving any insight into the story events, or the character himself.
There are some really good moments, where the narrative dispenses with the laughs and nonsensical jargon in favor of some truly poignant scenes, though: Most notably in the 'boss fight' at the end of one of the Autumn stages.
Overall, I think it's worthy of one's time, but I would just caution not to go into it expecting too much. Unless you're a fan of Kanno Yoko; in which case, I'm fairly certain you won't be disappointed.

Duck Tales NES *NEW*
Mega Bomberman Mega Drive *NEW*
Monster World IV VC *NEW*
Total: 59

3 new games for the list. Duck Tales and Monster World IV were both beaten for the Summer Games Challenge, whilst Mega Bomberman was taken down for the August Together Retro.

Although I went into more depth about them in their respective threads, I'll summarise here too:

Duck Tales was a simple but fun game. There was some annoying repetition of the Transylvania level, but the music was great, the gameplay was classic 8 bit fun, the difficulty was easy, but not ridiculously so and the graphics were quite nice. It's definitely worth getting, even though it's not an absolute must own imo.

Mega Bomberman is a fun game, but as usual the 1 player mode takes a back seat to the multiplayer. As far as Bomberman single player goes though, this is one of the better ones. The Louies you can ride are fun to use, lend new powers to the game for variety, and give you an extra hit, which is always appreciated. The power ups are good and varied, and fairly abundant, unlike other games in the series. Certain power up combos make the game quite easy too (line bomb + remote control = <3). However, losing your power ups upon death, the limited lives and the need to grind for items again when you game over or use a password are frustrating. Overall a good game, and thats without talking about the multiplayer mode, which is fantastic.

Monster World IV was a fun and challenging little game. It was a very streamlined adventure platformer, but it really did boil it down to the essence of what made the previous entries in the series so great. The sprites looked amazing and the music was pretty nice too. The translation was nothing special, but functional and true to the era the game was made, which was nice. The biggest addition to the franchise was your partner, Pepelogoo, who was used to solve puzzles, double jump and glide. Normally the puzzles you solved with him were very simple, but they were fun, and the character was too cute and too useful to dislike. The game was perhaps a bit short compared to Monster World, but was still a decent length for a Mega Drive adventure. Overall it's a contender for best in the series to me, rivalling Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap for the title. It's a brilliant game that everyone should download and I'm sad that the series is over.

It's a must own, in my book. It was one of the first games I went for when re-building my NES collection after my brother sold it. IMO, it's the best straight platformer on the NES other than the Super Mario Bros. series.

35. Akai Katana (360)
36. Sound Shapes (Vita)

I finished the campaign, but that happens to unlock a whole bunch of other stuff to try and complete for trophies.

This game is easily my favorite Vita game so far. I'm a huge fan of games that incorporate music and rhythm into their gameplay, and the fact that they found a way to blend that with side-scrolling platforming just makes me giddy. It also has a comprehensive level editor that serves just as much as a music editor, and the levels created by the community are extremely easy to access. I'll be playing with this one for awhile.

I've been on a roll lately, so I figured I should start keeping track of my games finished here.

1. Skyrim (360)
2. SSX (360)
3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360)
4. Assassin's Creed (360)
5. Assassin's Creed 2 (360)
6. Gears of War (360)
7. Halo Reach (360)
8. Mass Effect 2: Lair of the Shadow Broker (360)
9. Mass Effect 3 (360)
10. de Blob (Wii)
11. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
12. Mighty Switch Force! (3DSDL)
13. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
14. Yoshi's Island (SNES)
15. Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 (GBA)
16. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)

Beat A Link to the Past with all items and upgrades. So glad I went back to beat this Zelda game. Everything is so solid in it. I amazingly never felt lost in the dungeons and always knew where to go next (except for maybe the Ganon's Tower... that thing is diabolical). Ganon himself was surprisingly easy to beat once I figured out his pattern. When I was done I had that bittersweet feeling of wanting to adventure more in the game's universe, but knowing that there wasn't anything left to accomplish there.

January-June
Bride of Pin*Bot (from Pinball Arcade) - Vita
Pac-Man Championship Edition DX - PS3
Super Stardust Delta - Vita
DoDonPachi Resurrection - 360
Bit.Trip Beat - PC
Dear Esther - PC
Wizorb - PC *new*
Sound Shapes - Vita *new*

TOTAL: 44

2011 Games Beaten
2010 Games Beaten

Both of these games are a lot of fun and well worth picking up - I have no hesitation in recommending either. In both cases I started and finished each game in the same day.

Wizorb is a RPG-lite take on Arkanoid, and it throws some nice "treasure hunting" mechanics into the mix. The soundtrack is nice, the graphics remind me in some ways of the shift from VGA to SVGA era of PC gaming. This was a nice surprise gifted to me in the Steam sale.

Sound Shapes is my new runner-up for GOTY (behind Journey). I had seen it defined as a "rhythm game with platforming sections" but that isn't really an apt description. This is a platformer along the lines of something like VVVVVV but with an even better soundtrack -one that gets stronger as you improve and collect items through a level. I currently think that this might be the best video game soundtrack to ever feature a diverse set of artists - it really is a phenomenal experience. The controls are tight, the graphics are inspired and quirky, and the whole thing is a blast to play. If you have a Vita or PS3, go grab it now - you won't regret it.

1. Toy Story 2 (PS)
2. The Adventures of Cookie & Cream (PS2)
3. Bully (PS2) 5-7-12
4. RC Revenge Pro (PS2) 5-23-12
5. Custom Robo (GCN) 5-28-12
6. Ico (PS2) 6-10-12
7. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) 6-16-12
8. Kingdom Hearts (PS2) 6-20-12
9. The Saboteur (PS3) 8-10-12

I decided it was time for me to finally get in on this thread! I was feeling like I'd kinda stagnated in terms of actually finishing games and after looking back, it looks like I had! I have actually beaten a bit more than I thought I had though. But I figured this thread would keep me a little more motivated to actually finish a bit more of what I start. That and my backloggery account... which is where I got all those old dates from.... which I hope are actually correct. It says I beat The Saboteur on the 11th...which is tomorrow....

ANYWAY! I bought The Saboteur based on JT's recommendation to someone else in a different thread and I really loved it! I love Paris and World War II games and I really enjoyed this excellent combo. I've even done almost 2/3rds of the freeplay targets. I don't know if I'll ever finish getting all of them, but like I said, I really enjoyed this game!

From what I can remember...In no specific order.

1. Urban Reign (PS2)
2. Sonic Generations (PC)
3. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (PC)
4. Watchmen: The End Is Nigh Part 1 & 2 (PC)
5. Half-Life Episode 1 (PC)
6. Thunder Force V (Saturn)
7. Snatcher (Sega CD)
8. Madworld

As you can see, I like playing short games. :P Never really feel like dedicating alot of time into a super long game unless it's something I consider a must-play like Mario RPG or something.
