Favorite system to play original GameBoy games on?
Re: Favorite system to play original GameBoy games on?
Game Boy Light. It gives me the original LCD screen with its motion blur that the games were designed on but with a nice glow so I don't have to hold it under a lamp.

I tend to play original GB games on the Super Game Boy. GBC and GBA, I use the Game Boy Player. But if I'm actually on a car ride or in another room of the house where my consoles aren't hooked up, I'll use the SP.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who loves the Nintendo e-Reader.

I choose GB SP, since when I take my games with me, that's my system of choice.
But if I'm playing them at home, then I pop them into the Game Boy Player.

DS-Lite via emulator. (You can even make the display pea soup green or true B&W.)
2nd would be via SuperFamicom+SuperGameboy.
3rd would be on a GBASP.

(FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

I also like the 001-model SP. It's not as bright, but I think the colors look warmer and the motion is really good.

GBA SP 101 Model. Hands down the best for playing the original carts. Screen is as bright and vivid as my 3DS screen.

Game Boy Advance SP, AGS #101
Love the backlight on it. Because of it, it's given me renewed interest in portable gaming again, so that's my choice, at least for on the go play.
Now if I'm going to play original GB games at home.....well, that choice gets a little more difficult. See, I have BOTH the Super Game Boy, AND the Game Boy Player.
The SGB is great because:
- the added color
- using a SNES controller to control the game
- added borders
- making your own custom color palettes/borders
- special SGB options depending on the game you're playing,
- being able to play GBC color games (the black cart ones, not the clear, see through, GBC only games).
Not so great because:
- Playing screen is considerably smaller than the GBP (if you stretch it out)
- Music and sound effects sound different due to the clock speed of the SGB being 2.4% faster than normal
- You can't play the clear GBC and GBA carts on a Super Game Boy
- Can't save custom borders
The GBP is great because :
- You can play nearly all of the GB/GBC/GBA library, with only a few exceptions
- A bigger screen for playback (in comparison to the SGB)
- An option to change screen size (even moreso for GB and GBC games)
- A bigger selection of borders
- Games play at normal speed in comparison to the SGB
- Use of Gamecube controllers, GBA, and GBA SP units as controllers
- Slightly easier to pull off multiplayer if you have enough GCN/GBA cables and GBA units
- And some games having certain features via the GBP (mostly added rumble to a few games).
Not so great because:
- Not nearly as much customization compared to the SGB
- Far fewer color palettes for GB games
- Can only choose said color palettes during GB startup screen, which is very annoying
- Reliance on more parts to play it (GBP is basically useless without the disc)
- Gamecube controller not the best controller to use for playing on the GBP
- Unit is more expensive than SGB, and harder to find complete
- All the cool SGB stuff you got with the SGB enhanced games? Not on the GBP!
- Some games won't do well on the GBP (anything with motion sensor will be awkward to play)
- Controller lag compared to the SGB (regular, Wavebird, GBA/SP all exhibit this)
So my verdict is.....if you want to play your original GB games, the Super Game Boy is the better bet of the two.
