Another reason could be that the original was released on the Disk System in Japan which not many regular people bought. My friend that had the Disk System, the only one among his friends, speculates the same for Kid Icarus' popularity too.MrPopo wrote:Metroid is in an interesting position as it is very well liked in the west but not so much in Japan. Other M was about as far away from westernized as I can imagine.GameMasterGuy wrote:I was talking about Other M.Hobie-wan wrote:You mean like the Metroid Prime stuff? Yeah, those didn't do so hot.GameMasterGuy wrote: Funny how once we got a Westernized Metroid it completely failed.

I know exactly what you meant, but The Prime games were made by US developers and they are FPS which is a style of game far more popular in the west. Yet they were loved.GameMasterGuy wrote:I was talking about Other M.

Westernized? Other M's narrative failed because it was a badly-executed anime cliche storm, and because it just didn't have the tone that other Metroid games did.

It was linear, focused more on Samus's love life than the overall plot of the universe, and removed missile and health conservation. I'd say that's westernized.

Do people even buy Nintendo's new franchises? How many people bought Xenoblade? (It was made by a studio owned by Nintendo so it's first party). I mean it did well, but is it worth investing in a Xenoblade 2 instead of a Wii Sports 3?

Why is Nintendo getting singled-out here. This entire generation of gaming has this problem. Sequels, prequels, and remakes are the norm any more. ALL OF GAMING needs to be more innovative and try out new IPs.

Like the others I disagree. If anything those changes were made to appeal more to Japanese gamers.GameMasterGuy wrote:It was linear, focused more on Samus's love life than the overall plot of the universe, and removed missile and health conservation. I'd say that's westernized.
Non-linear game designs are a lot more common and popular in the west. I'm not sure how making a game linear is westernizing it.
I think Nintendo draws more attention to itself simply because one of the main reasons you buy a Nintendo console, at least initially, is for their 1st party titles.BurningDoom wrote:Why is Nintendo getting singled-out here. But you're right, they're not the only developer with this problem.

Pretty much this, but Nintendo's probably best-known for their first party games, which are the main selling point of the consoles.BurningDoom wrote:Why is Nintendo getting singled-out here. Also, Dillon's Rolling Western. Steel Diver. Two new very recent IPs.
