Thinking of saving for a atari 7800 or just buy nes ports

NES ports are better. 7800 games don't hold up as well. But like Ryan said, the console is a helluva lot better looking than the NES.

I do think some of the NES versions are better and cheaper. If you already have that system, you really should check them out on there first.

That being said I still want a 7800 and those games too!

Edit:

What I would do is buy the cheap NES ports and play while you keep a watch for a deal on a 7800. Then take the collection from there and sell the NES ports for the 7800 ones.

I never played the 7800 version of Galaga, I'm surprised at how poor it looks. The NES got such a wonderful port.

That said I've been looking into getting a 7800 for my 2600 games myself.

Just buy the NES ports for four reasons:
The NES version of these games look and sound better.
The NES has a much better controller.
The NES versions are cheaper.
You already own an NES.

If you're on such a tight budget, don't waste money buying a whole new system. The NES has great arcade ports (and many other classics) why are you even considering spending money on a new system?

I would actually go for the 7800. Some of the cross-platform games are better on the NES, but the 7800 has some wonderful homebrews out there and some interesting original titles as well. It's a shame it didn't get any more attention.

They definitely sound better. Atari 7800's major weakness was the sound chip. I don't understand why Atari would take the time to make a whole new console with high-end graphics (for the time), but still use the crappiest sound chip in existence. They used the same sound chip that was in the Atari 2600.

Technically it's not just a sound chip, it also acts as the graphics chip for 2600 games. The 7800 motherboard is fairly cramped and so had no room for a dedicated sound chip. General Computer (the company which designed the 7800) did include a provision for external audio through the cartridge port but only two original releases made use of it. Some homebrews use it as well and the upcoming 7800 expansion module has two audio chips.
