What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Yeah, Doom 3 with THAT thing would be incredible.

Quake 4 is Doom 3 on steroids.. which is I prefer it over D3 any day of the week. I caught myself trying to use iron sights instinctively whilst playing a couple of older fps titles.

Hmm, I'm quite the opposite there. I've been wondering if Quake 4 runs way better on the PC though (I'm going to figure that's an obvious yes? haha). I just played it back on the 360 back when it was new and it had one of the worst framerates ever.
I liked Doom 3's atmosphere a lot more. Both games aren't scary a damn bit to me, but I guess I just liked Doom 3's world more. But... they seriously feel like they're part of the same world anyways, haha. Quake 4 was still very solid and some sick sci-fi. I might have to check it out for the PC sometime.

Both games felt forgettable to me, though they had their moments. Becoming a Strogg was the pinnacle of Quake 4, and I will never forget the first time I encountered that insect-infant hybrid thing in Doom 3. I don't remember complaining about Quake 4 nearly as much as I did about Doom 3, but the bizarre grenade physics really bugged me. They're both ok, but I feel there were much better FPS released in the last decade.
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
In comparison, Half-Life 2 has certainly aged about 2,000x better than Doom 3. No doubt. I remember both being a huge deal back in the day and yeah. Doom 3 is clunky and dated, but HL2 is still a blast and feels timeless.
Still a fan of Doom 3 and Quake 4 though. I tend to hate Raven's games for some weird reason, but Quake 4 was a good one from them for me next to Singularity.

I remember there was a big debate amongst PC gamers as to whether HL2 or Doom 3 was the better game. Time has certainly proven HL2 to be the superior one.Xeogred wrote:In comparison, Half-Life 2 has certainly aged about 2,000x better than Doom 3. No doubt. So has anyone here played Vampire: The Masquerade? Thoughts? I always see it gets Deus Ex comparisons, so... sounds awesome.

I have it. I played it eons ago when it was released and enjoyed it then, and picked it up in the recent Steam sale with the thought of revisiting it in October for "horror game month".Xeogred wrote:So has anyone here played Vampire: The Masquerade? It isn't an FPS.
EDIT: Apparently I picked up "Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines" which is not the same game or genre. Dammit.
EDIT 2: This is the one I liked: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/vampire_ ... redemption

Oh man, yeah it's all confusing...
I uh, was thinking of Bloodlines there though.

Yes, I enjoyed it a lot. Enough to the point that I actually started a new game shortly after finishing it the first time, which I hardly ever do (only other time I did it was with KoTOR to play the Dark Side). In the case of Bloodlines, I did it to play as a Malkavian, as opposed to the Ventrue I beat the game as. Malkavian is probably more suited to a second playthrough, as some of the "insight" you get from the clan perk makes more sense if you know the plot already, and the odd dialogue choices more amusing when you know what the vanilla lines would be like.Xeogred wrote:So has anyone here played Vampire: The Masquerade? Some of the other clans create a different gameplay experience too, which to me is nice to see for an RPG (notably, Nosferatu have to use the sewers to get around as being seeing by most NPCs is a Masquerade violation).
It is a lot like Deus Ex, I think, but has a lot more personality (and ambition, compared to HR). It had a bit of a flawed release because it was buggy as hell, and it's -still- pretty buggy even with the unofficial patch. What may also be annoying is that, as it -is- a first person RPG, there are a lot of skill checks, making combat terrible initially. You can do alright with melee weapons, but it'll take a bit of pumping points into firearms for them to become effective.
Basically, there are some rough edges, but if you like the Deus Ex style of play, it should be on your list IMO.
