Wow. Now you have me worried that my emulator's gonna shit out. I'm still using shmupmame 3.0b, and it's actually working pretty well. I'ma be pissed if it stops working on me.

Not trying to be a jerk, I just really can't understand how you guys are having issues beyond finding working roms.

the first build I had was ShmupMAME 3.0b. It worked fine. Until about 3 days later when it refused to open. At all. The program gave me an error code something like cx0000005 if I remember. I google'd and found this was a weird Win7 security issue and and found a walkthrough to fix it. Hours wasted. Didn't work. Other forums had people saying the same thing. 3.0b will selectively work or not work at all on Win7 64-bit.

Second I tried WolfMAME. It didd'nt have a ROM folder like you mention. So I put one in there. But it woulndn't find the ROM's. 20 mins later I went looking for something else.

I believe I next tried a diff build of WolfMAME found on the Twin Galaxies site or somehow connnected to TG. It had a self-installer and was meant to be easier. It launched Strikers 1999 and froze.

So then I dug through the 1999 thread on Shmups and found another MAME build mentioned and raved about (forget what it was called... MAMEUA or something?) and downloaded it. Installed. Launched.... froze up altogether.

Finally found that using ShmupMAME 2.2 has been working for Strikers and this game, but without sound on V-V. But after you can read the night I wasted above just trying to Start a fucking game, there's little appealing to me about trying another build of MAME just for a month-long contest.

I don't understand your problems here at all. I installed the newest version of regular old MAME with a very basic frontend last summer on my cab and haven't run into issues with anything I've tried to play in STGT or anything else for the past year or so. It handles whatever I throw at it, unless MAME itself tells me the ROM doesn't have full support.

Bad luck, I guess?

Meh, it works. Rather well, actually. Unless I encounter some unforseen problem, I'll just use this. The only reason I'm even using it is for the tournament; I'm not big on emulation at all.

I'm not disputing guys have good luck, but just as many have bad luck.

Last year this version of shmupmame supported my stick. Didn't touch it for 11 months. It loaded up just fine, the strikers rom checked out...no stick recognition. No reason the same emulator and the same arcade stick wouldn't work - cept' it didn't. Spent hours going through all the troubleshooting that other people who had the same things happen to them, reconfigured the ctrl folder, unzipped this, extracted that, found new roms, ended up installing/uninstalling 3 diff. versions and ended up just using the joy2key trick.

My laptop is almost 4 years old, maybe that's part of the problem, prolly is. Regardless, I won't be using it for another 11 months. Maybe if it's something you use often, you learn to work out all the kinks and what works and doesn't and all that goes along with working with something. But for those of us who use MAME for 4 weeks a year, it's a pain in the balls to troubleshoot.

at least I found a solution to the no-sound problem. Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 85-92 works amazingly well as a soundtrack for this game.

EDIT: And ya know what? This game might as well only be two levels, because that's all I ever see. Coast through to the 2nd boss and lose all 3 lives on him. Fun.

I've played quite a few shmups. There are a lot of games where it's tough to recover if you die, most Gradius games come to mind.

But nothing like this. It's crazy - you can be on a real nice run, playing well, die once beginning at the stage 2 boss and beyond and your game is over.

Hate to be negative nelly, but this is two duds in a row, imo. I never thought i'd be craving Strikers III...but I am. This game is just brutal if you die. Brutal.

You guys would LOVE Tatsujin Oh!

Its funny, I am apparently the only person here that really enjoys this game, and yet I have no fucking way to play it.

I found out that ebay decided to use my old address instead of my new one, and my charger has been sitting at the old house for 3 days.

The people that moved in there will not answer their door or call me back when I left them a note. So, gonna have to order another fucking charger, and will probably miss out on what will likely be my favorite game from this STGT.

And then I have to watch you all bitch!

This game is no worse than Raiden II or Truxton, and Gradius III is way harder than this game imo.

Sadly, I have nothing to contribute other than whinign that I can't play.
