Thinking of saving for a atari 7800 or just buy nes ports

Post by mas »

Hi Everyone,
Last year I was thinking of getting a atari 7800. After a few weeks I never got a good deal and I just forgot about it. I ended up talking to a friend at work saying how great his atari was and that i should pick one up.
Now i'm stuck on this. See i have a nes and all the great games that are on the 7800 are on the nes and some look better on the nes so for me i feel like it's a no brainer get the nes ports of the classic arcade games. But my buddy at work made me think about getting the atari by saying that I was born in 76. I grew up on atari and I should get it. Besides If you think of retro classic arcade games you think of atari.
So I need to ask if anybody out there feels the same way as my friend. I mean he makes a good point. And If you guys own a 7800 how do you guys like the system and games. Do the play or feel better playing on a atari system or does it matter for anyone? Any feedback will help. Thanks for reading and posting replies

I grew up on and love my 7800.

The NES has a vastly superior library, including a greater variety of arcade ports (almost all of which are better than their 8-bit port competitors).

However, if you want to play a bunch of VCS classics, a 7800 is the way to go.

I know and I appoligize for it but this is where i'm comming from. I have somewhat of a tight budget. I can only spend between 15-20 every other week or so when it comes to gaming. That's why I always ask either if I should keep something or what system would be my best intrest or things of that nature. If I buy a system and play with it for a week or two then I think that that's money I could of save to get something current on the 360 or wii or buy a great retro game. And when I don't play with it I either sell it because I see a great deal like I had last weekend I had all those systems that I bought for 30.00 and I was broke. So I sold most of the systems for 150.00 and I sold a few gamecube games to make my money back for that day.
This is why I always ask because If I spend money on a atari, then I just am afraid of saving 60.00 or so to buy the games and system and find out later I should of kept my money.
My point in general. I saved up 100.00 for a modded xbox with all the games, roms, movies, arcade, etc I ever wanted and Now it's collecting dust because I find out playing a rom with an xbox controller is not the same as an actual system and playing on a real nes, or genesis or playstation controller.
Sorry about the long speech guys but I wish I was a kid and get everything. But I like i'm sure many of you have bills and kids and married and just don't have the cash for alot of retro gaming. Thanks for being so understanding

Does it enhance 2600 games in any way? Or are they just as playable on the 2600? I already have both an Atari 2600 and an NES, which is why I'm wondering.

It does not. If you already have a 2600 then you would be picking up a 7800 primarily for it's own library. That said, while small, the 7800 has quite a few gems worth pursuing and a couple of definitive 8-bit ports.

You seriously need help if you need to continually ask others on how to spend your money, especially on your budget. My advice: QUIT SELLING AND BUYING SYSTEMS. But back to your query.

Every system has its gems, my pick for the 7800 would be Ball Blazer. A very nice soccer style game using space ships. Sounds silly, but a very good game unlike the PS1 followup. A good portion of the 7800 games work just fine with a 2600 compatible joystick such as a Wico or EPYX.

If getting the console for just 2600 games, its better to get an older 2600 console. A solid metal support around the cart slot in the early consoles. Really, the carts plug in and out like butter.

I dont remember at all if i ever got a 2600. That's why I want the 7800. I want to try to play the 2600 games. I'm goiing to sleep on this. I just saw mario bros for the 7800 is 30-50.00 while the nes is about 10.00. This is why I'm asking on if I should get into a 7800 or just buy the nes ports of the 7800 library

The 7800 is just a cool system to have. It's largest value is in the 2600 games it can play. It's a bit like the 3DO, there are some gems, but it's just not really worth it for most people.

It's also a pretty good looking console to have on the shelf (especially if the metal plate is still clean!)

I'd go for NES ports. They're cheaper and sometimes better.
