Keeping consoles clean and dust free?

Anyone still have the red dust shield that came with the Genesis?

What? I bought a Genesis in '89 and I don't remember that.

I still have the one that goes over the contacts for the expansion port on the Genesis 2, if that's what you're referring to.

Ohhhhh on the side where the expansion port is? Wow... I never had an SCD so other than taking that cover off to see what was there, the cover never came off again. I don't remember it on the original Gen that I sold but I do recall it on the Gen2.
I thought Luke meant a main cartridge slot cover.

yep. i dust my consoles that are on display every sunday. i even use a vacuum inside the slots if you want to go beyond dusting.

That and dust filter things to put on the intakes works well too.

How about something like a hard plastic cover for the consoles? Like they use to make for video games or like the ones you can get in the RB store?

I had an issue with water leaking a few months ago and I have all of my consoles in shoe boxes so that they stack. Something that's hard plastic that fits the console, cords, and maybe a controller or two would be great.

Anything like that or am I pipe dreaming?

Is that the kind of thing you're talking about? This particular one is pretty cool, though it says Nintendo, it also has slots for an Atari 2600/7800 or Master System. And it has a small opening in the back that you can feed the cords through, so you can actually have everything set up and just put the lid on it so your games/system won't get dusty. It might not be the cheapest route, I'm not sure how much these things go for. I got lucky and found mine in the box at a yard sale for $5. Unfortunately I don't really have the space to actually use it though.

I had one of those for my Atari 2600 collection! Not the exact same one, but one made by Atari for the Atari 2600. It even had the cool wood-grain finish like the 2600.

But I sold it along with my Atari 2600 game collection when I needed cash, because it was my least played console. I have all of 6 games for it now, when I had nearly 50.

Dusting, occasionally cleaning out the insides.

In my house, with shitty carpet and vents on the floor, dusting is only for when guests come. Otherwise it gives a thick, noticeable covering overnight. And the dust is freaking BLUE.

My girlfriend's uncle swears by the dust cover he has for the PS3. I can't remember for the life of me where he got one, but it was made specifically for a fat model PS3. I just have to dust mine pretty much every day, as I get a coat of dust overnight no matter what I try to prevent it from happening. I'm thankful for my little swiffer dusty-thingy with replaceable duster parts. It seems to do the job nicely enough.

One thing to watch out for with dust covers for systems since 2000 is that they are never truly off. So you don't want to be holding that reserve power heat in.

My room is just so dusty I feel like after I dust, 10 minutes later there's a new layer already.
I'm liking those nintendo cases for consoles and games. I've never seen those before.
