Game System Swan Songs
What are some games that came out at the end of a systems life that pretty much use all of the potential that the system is capable of?
A few I can think of:
Genesis: Ristar, Comix Zone
Neo-Geo: Fatal Fury: Mark of Wolves
PS2: God of War 2, Okami, Odin Sphere

Saturn:
-Panzer Dragoon Saga
-Burning Rangers
I'm not sure if Mickey Mania came out at the end of the Sega CD lifespan, but that game really pushed the Genesis/Sega CD capabilities.
Zero Tolerance isn't the greatest game out there, but it created a functional FPS on the Genesis hardware AND created the possibility of cabling two systems together for two player action (can't remember if it was co-op or deathmatch or both). Pretty impressive stuff given the limits of the hardware and no inherent 3D capabilities.

I would love to do an expose on the Xbox's swan song, but Microsoft had to put it to bed too early to get anything that truly pushed the console to the limits. Visually outstanding games included Ninja Gaiden (Black came out months before the 360 did), Escape From Butcher Bay, and Halo 2. There were some other nice titles, but for the most part, this system didn't last long enough to have a swan song. Any of these games could have easily been released on the 360 during the first year of it's existence, and we would all still be impressed.
I'm hard pressed to come up with anything on the Xbox that could even be considered an overlooked title late it a console's lifespan, ala Panzer Dragoon Saga. A case could be made for Xyanide or Painkiller: Hell Wars, but not a very good one.
There are the generally overlooked titles on the Xbox like Conker, JSRF, Otogi, Panzer Dragoon and Phantom Dust, but sadly, this system was even robbed of it's swan song...

I know what you mean, Otogi 2 was released late in its life but that doesn't really count. Oh well, at least the 360 is doing well enough to ensure a swan song or two.RackGaki wrote:I would love to do an expose on the Xbox's swan song, but Microsoft had to put it to bed too early to get anything that truly pushed the console to the limits.
