OUYA: Open Source Console - Kickstarted in 1 Day
Re: OUYA: Open Source Console - Kickstarted in 1 Day
OUYA and AXE Shock Bodywash make my tingle.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.
Re: OUYA: Open Source Console - Kickstarted in 1 Day
I've always wanted to build a PC with some spare parts around the house for a emu rig to the TV, but all my spare PC cases are ugly, large... and that horrific 90's beige. So instead of dumping the money on a cheap HTPC case plus the few parts I'm missing, I just dumped it on this. Its a emu box at worst and a new platform to tinker on! Price is right thats for sure.
I can see it being a pirates dream so first party support might not be the best. This article points out some 'what if' flaws, interesting to consider.
For me the appeal (like most) is the openness of the system. I can't wait to boot up a SNES emulator and play some 2 player Metal Warriors!!!

Yeah, I upgraded my support level to that.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:I bit the bullet and went for the $140 special edition brown. As long as the project is completed I'm not really going to be disappointed. Worst case scenario it becomes a very nice and compact emulation box.
Worst worst case scenario, it's a Pippin (okay, they already presold more than that ever did).

Id say worst worst is that it doesnt come out. I sadly do not have the funds right now - that and Ive backed six kickstarters that have not paid off yet. But if it comes out and is decent, Ill be buying a couple.isiolia wrote:Worst worst case scenario, it's a Pippin (okay, they already presold more than that ever did).

I'm a little out of it with PC stuff but - say a game like NBA2k12 was on this. Would I be able to download software updates/rosters/etc (even if using a USB) and modify my game?
I'm sure there are similar examples in other genres.
How does that work with this type of thing?

I really hope that the Ouya will have USB ports. Even just one would suffice. That would open up the door to soooooo many other applications.
EDIT: Hallelujah! Looking at the Kickstarter page, it confirms that the Ouya will indeed have a USB port! Looks like this will be a valid XBMC box after all!
*dances*

True, though to me the fact that it's just Android with a frontend makes it less likely to be vaporware. Outside of their front end, it's pretty much a matter of finalizing the case/controller and manufacturing it.fastbilly1 wrote:Id say worst worst is that it doesnt come out. The technical capabilities of the system would allow for it. If you mean user-generated up-to-date rosters, then it'd probably depend on the capabilities the developer provides for. The Ouya front-end is going to be fairly locked down with regards software they're selling. With something like Steam you can usually still do unofficial mods, but with Ouya's plan to require free gameplay they'll probably want to restrict tweaking files. My guess there is that you'll wind up with a lot of downloads that include the full game, but with limited functionality unless you purchase it.I'm a little out of it with PC stuff but - say a game like NBA2k12 was on this. Hard to say for sure until the thing ships, of course.

I'm remaining optimistic for it but also staying on guard. If it all comes out the way they are advertising I will pick one up, as it stands it is well worth the $100. I mean tablets with this power cost 5x more, so there is something to be said in that.
Even if it doesn't get a lot of support in new games it will be a great emulation device and now with a USB port it opens a lot of windows. Its size allows it to be converted into a great portable MAME cab.

from what im seeing its a portable android console shaped like a rubiks cube with a controller, usb ports and a hdmi output, It also has its own front end, which is cool, i've seen a few android tablets with a gamers type front end featuring games and emulators. for 99 dollars, hell yeah i'm getting this.. You can play all the emulators available for android with full romsets, that's crazy, oh wait, it only has 8gb memory, does it have a sd card slot?
