Dreamcast Keyboard

Post by andymol21 »

The Dreamcast I have came with a boxed Dreamcast Keyboard and I'm a little lost on what to do with it. So, going to the one site that I knew would give me all the answers I typed Dreamcast Keyboard into the search bar here and, low and behold, Racketboy had an article on it. However, when I read it it seemed a bit... lacking. I was expecting hunderds of brilliant ideas and concepts for the keyboard but, the only one that intrested me was Typing of the Dead (which does look awesome, I must burn that tommorrow!) So, any other suggestions on what to use this keyboard with? It's such a good looking retro piece of hardware that it seems a shame just to leave it in its box. I've actually been taking it out at night and just tapping away at it just for the feel :P. I might buy a Dreamcast mouse off eBay if I see one cheap just to get the full set but again I don't really see any games that support them. What do you guys use your keyboards and/or mice for?

The best use for the keyboard is for The Typing of the Dead and to talk on Phantasy Star Online if you play that too. The Dreamcast is pretty much useless for web browsing these days due to the low resolution, the horizontal scrolling is a bitch. Also, the web browsers are kind of slow for today's sites.

The Typing of the Dead is a great game though, tons of hilarious phrases and sayings. It makes for many inside jokes if you have two keyboards and duke it out with a friend 8)

Nowadays it is really only useful for Typing of the Dead - though I suggest buying another keyboard for that alone

also, some games use it if you're into computer gaming controls - asdw for movement and the like

Yeah, PSO and TotD are one of the best uses for it. I used to use it for Quake 3 Arena with the official mouse (I still have both like new in box). The bills I racked up back in the day from playing that game (and PSO) constantly online...

It's not a well known or advertised feature but, you can use the Dreamcast Mouse with Rez.

Personally, I think that's the best way to play it.

You don't know what to do with it? You fool! Obviously, you hook your Dreamcast up to the internet, via dial up modem, and use the keyboard to surf the web and visit your favorite forums, such as Racketboy! Psh. N00b.

Surfing the internet on the DC seems lame now, But it was tight as shit back then. I still use dial up on my dc when broadband fails (I steal BB from my neighbors)
I will create a monument to non-existence.

I use my keyboard for a few linux distros for the DC. You can even run a small apache web server on it.
