PSP Deals + Crash Course
PSP Deals + Crash Course
I recently developed an interest in the PSP due to emulation and just wanted to know if anyone could give me a quick crash course as to how difficult it is to get the PSP emulating? I was checking out the GOW limited edition and the best deal I can find on that is FYE has it w/ a 30 dollar rebate..so 169.99...does anyone know of any better deals?

that was on gizmodo the other day. Might be a good place to start.
Don't have a psp myself, otherwise i'd help you out.

The hardest part is getting the firmware for running homebrew installed, those pre-pandorized batteries are just making things more accesible. Didn't read the whole thing but the instructions are rather clear, the battery they sell on dealextreme has a lower price but I think the memory stick included doesn't include the necessary files but thats widely available on the net and there are hundred of tutorials. I was planning to get one because I only have one battery and using to install firmware for other psp is just annoying. And even so I still think all this new stuff its rather easy compared to the old days of psp homebrew and firmware downgrading.
After that's done running psp games or emulators is just a thing of copying files.

i went ahead and got the GOW psp today and started studying up on the cfw and whatnot.
theres a lot of tutorials out there and its hard to know what to make of it all.
the most confusing part for me right now is the Pandoras battery thing...I could buy it, or apparently turn my battery into one?
It involves just breaking a specific connection on the circuit board in the battery...dont know if Im going to attempt this or just buy a battery

When I first got my PSP I followed detailed illustrated instructions for how to turn my battery into a Pandora. I ended up failing and having a broken battery.
I'd given up on CFW for my PSP, but after reading that Gizmodo article I ordered the $10 Pandora they linked to. I'll let you know how it works when it gets here - but it is probably the smarter way to go over trying to hack your battery.
i ordered the battery too. 10 bucks is cheap enough and free ship. The info on how to mod the battery is just too all over the place. One place says it cant be done to a slim battery, one says it wont charge anymore, another says you need to clip pin 5 off or desolder it, another says to break one of the connections....it doesnt seem worth the hassle to probably destroy my battery.
However, after having the battery, making the memory stick seems easy enough and I guess well see from there. As long as my wife can play Maniac Mansion on it, she will be happy.

Buying the battery seems the best way for you guys. A long time ago I used an app to make the stick, it included all of the files and did everything with a few clicks but I don't remember the name. I've been thinking of playing some SCUMM games myself on the psp, got the games already but right now busy playing GOW.

My $10 battery arrived yesterday and it worked flawlessly. The battery took about 10 days to get here from Hong Kong. It was just the tool battery wrapped in bubble wrap - no packaging, instructions, etc. It took about 10 minutes of following the directions from the gizmodo link above to get CFW 4.01 up and running.
If anyone has been on the fence about giving this a go, it's definitely worth doing. There's plenty of guides around the web to answer any questions that might come up.
I've already started playing emulators, PSP backups, PSX games, etc. - what else have people found to be interesting to do with CFW?
