Giving someone a crash course in gaming history & culture?

Have to say, I have not really heard about good definitive reads on the topic, it's all very fragmentated.


For culture, there are two things I would check out: The documentary Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade and a pretty cool article on the history of the Japanese DDR community (http://aaronin.jp/#ddr) that has apparently also been turned into a book called "Counting Combos". Both are goldmines for ideas and the topics covered apply to all things gaming so I would check them out.

Beyond that, I agree that she would learn a lot from some old school games. Back in the day players had very few games, they costed the equivalent of 100$ or more, and you had to get into them because you had little else so the culture is pretty different, not just the level of difficulty.

You know General_Norris I was about to say those prices were a bit off but with inflation that sounds about right, its no wonder when rentals hit the scene people were pulling the old I lost the game trick to get a game for the $20 dollar replacement fee.
