Flashback or Out of This World?

Post by Flak Beard »

I've recently taken curiosity to these games and I was wondering which of the two I should pick up. Also, out of Genesis and SNES which version is the best? I've heard the SNES versions are censored a bit.

Flashback on Genesis would be my favourite. Do you have a SegaCD? Then definitely buy the sequel Heart of the Alien, since it includes a slightly enhanced version of the original game Out of this World as a bonus.

I haven't seen it myself, but I believe the Nintendo version does censor any blood (and partial nudity, I think?).

Why not both? If I had to pick one, I would go with Out of this World. I found it to be more cinematic. Not sure which console you should get it on, I know you can get a high-res version from the official website. That might be the best route. If you don't get it from there the site is worth checking out for the making of, and for a cool picture.

I´d go for Flashback i really liked how you dont know who you are at the beginning or why you were beeing shot at in the intro and it´s lot easier to get into in my expirience. Still not sure just emulate both and see what you like :D

Out of This World is one of the best games ever IMO. I suggest the 15th Anniversary HD PC version (known as Another World). Second best - Sega CD Heart of the Alien as Doc said. SNES third.

Flashback has a better (more detailed at least) story line and better graphics and is generally more accessible. Out of This World is fantastic but is wicked hard in some spots. If you have a Sega CD get the CD version of Flashback and Heart of the Alien and you'll end up with three games in all since it includes a copy of OOTW. Honestly, all three fall into the category of "not to be missed" in my book. I've played each of them multiple times and enjoyed every minute of the time spent with these games.

A less outstanding game but still a very playable game is Fade To Black which is a sequel to Flashback which was on PS1. It's also worth playing if you end up liking the Flashback story line. Also, if you do get Heart of the Alien, be sure to play both HotA and OoTW back to back as each game tells the same basic story but from different characters' perspectives. It's really interesting to see "what happened to the other guy" and to see how the storylines mesh and diverge.

i love these games. i really enjoyed fade to black too.

i would go with the sega cd route if you're looking for the "best" option. the PC versions are probably the best looking/playing of the two core games, imo. i don't think heart of the alien is on anything but sega cd, though. i could be wrong.

I agree, I own both and it's a great combination. I guess the PC versions are a bit more updated, but I'm guessing you want to play them on a console. no?

If I had to pick one, it'd be Heart of the Alien. I like the scenario and world a bit more than the cyber-punk esque style of Flashback. Plus ootw bonus makes it sweet.

Also has anyone played Generations Lost? I'm pretty sure it's by the same creators, but you're a caveman. Never heard anything really good about it though.

I'd recomend playing the Oddworld games too if you haven't. They feel very much akin in platforming style and puzzle elements. Definately in the original Prince of Persia style as well.
