Preface: I have a very nice WEGA CRT so I wouldn't use this for retrogaming but was just curious:
I noticed on a TV I was looking at that there is the ability to switch to 480i/p and then go full screen. Does this better simulate a CRT with older consoles?

Re: Quick TV Spec Question
Some older DVDs were hardcoded to be 4:3 letterboxed with black bars, before the anamorphic ones. So if you watch them on a widescreen TV at 4:3, you end up with a black frame around the entire thing. If you view them in 16:9, you end up with a stretched picture, but still have the hard coded black bars on the top and bottom. If you use the zoom, it blows up the image so you can generally end up with a proper aspect ratio picture that fills the screen. This will depend on the actual aspect ratio of the film, but is can usually end up with a better view.
Not sure what Full in 4:3 or Just (Justified?) would do.

Model number of the WEGA?retrosportsgamer wrote:Preface: I have a very nice WEGA CRT so I wouldn't use this for retrogaming but was just curious:

My WEGA supports video all the way up to 1080i, but there is no setting on the TV itself to change the resolution. This is done by the cable box, DVD player or game console. That said, the older consoles display just fine on the HD CRT. Try your WEGA out with one of your older consoles, you might be surprised.
Hobie is right about anamorphic movies. It would stretch the picture to fill in the top and bottom. If the movie is a widescreen of 1.85:1 or 2.39:1, then the black bars may still show, just not as large. This is done by setting the player to 16:9, though some will use a Full setting to do the stretch.
As for the other TV that has the various view settings, the FULL setting will usually stretch a non HD screen image to fill up the screen. This can be combined with a player setting to get the largest pic. Depending on the TV, a non HD image stretched may not look good and show dot crawl. For older consoles to simulate the CRT image, best to get a Plasma or stick with the tube.

Re: Quick TV Spec Question
Thanks. The TV I was referring to is a new flat screen LCD - that's the set that has the ability to go both 480p/i and 1080 p/i.
Re: Quick TV Spec Question
You can take an older console in to test run on the store display unit. Maybe select a game console that allows a quick composite hookup. Test it in that 480i setting, even try the higher resolution for a comparison.retrosportsgamer wrote:Thanks. A side note, If you need a PDF manual for you WEGA, the Sony Support site has them.
