Games to play with the wife/girlfriend

Post by Razzmatazz »

Well technically mine is a fiancee. Anyway, I've been playing Trauma Center: New Blood on the Wii with my fiancee, and it is a great game for not only laughing and arguing at each other, but it encourages team work and doesn't require one of us to be a video game veteran.

So it got me wondering, what games are good for couples to play that don't encourage one of us to dominate proceedings and go ahead doing everything (which I find New Super Mario Bros does, as it's a bit hard for her, although she did most of Rayman Origins and I did the bosses).
She has completed LA Noire (again with myself helping out on the shooting and driving bits) and is currently playing Little King's Story, so I'm looking for any co-op puzzley/platformer games that we can play in the evenings together.

    Trauma Center: New Blood
    Rayman Origins
    Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SNES/VC)
Kirby's Adventure Wii (AKA Kirbys Return to Dreamland) (Wii)
Streets of Rage 2 (Mega Drive)
    Castle Crashers (Xbox)
Scott Pilgrim vs the World (Xbox)
    IloMilo (Xbox)
    Lego Indiana Jones (Xbox)
    Lego Batman (Xbox)
    Lego Harry Potter (Xbox)

Are we talking only on Wii here, or are there other consoles you'd be willing to play?

Anyhow, here's some of the stuff me and my girlfriend have played through in co-op before:

Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SNES/VC)
Kirby's Adventure Wii (AKA Kirbys Return to Dreamland) (Wii)
Streets of Rage 2 (Mega Drive)
Castle Crashers (Xbox)
Scott Pilgrim vs the World (Xbox)
IloMilo (Xbox)
Lego Indiana Jones (Xbox)
Lego Batman (Xbox)
Lego Harry Potter (Xbox)

My girlfriend kinda got into gaming because of playing stuff with me, so we also ended up playing through Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2 and Resident Evil 4 together. Actually, all the Xbox games are hers, because she bought herself one when she got into gaming.

We primarily play the Wii, but can play Gamecube too. I tried to get her into Shenmue on the Dreamcast but she found it a bit linear and slow. She has completed the first Lego Harry Potter and I joined in too, those Lego games are great and reminds me that I should probably pick the sequel up! Are the Lego Batman games more fighting based, as she seems to panic when people start fighting her character in games!

Kirby sounds like a good shout as it has that girly look to it, is it similar to New Super Mario Bros in gameplay? It seems to hold it's value, much like most Nintendo games!

Retro games on the VC are also welcome, I did download Harvest Moon but she seems confused by it. Bless.

Kirby is a good choice. It's hard to die (impossible in Epic Yarn for Wii), easy to play and really charming and fun. Unlike NSMB Wii you don't really get in each others way as much either. Lego Batman has no more fighting than most Lego Games, although Harry Potter has less than the others. There's some puzzle solving involving changing suits, as Batman and Robin both have several different costumes each which give them different abilities. It's not as good as Harry Potter or Indiana Jones though, which were just better experiences all around.

If she's not keen of fighting in games, probably best to avoid those beat 'em ups I listed. Have you considered rhythm games? No conflict there, and depending on how good you both are at music you might find you're a little more evenly matched.

Thanks for those tips! This is funny actually as we was playing Bully last night and the lessons were rhythm based (well the music class was) and she said she loved it. I've been getting her into games as before we lived together she only played The Sims, so maybe Beat the Beat or even a Mario Party title could go down a storm.

My wife thoroughly enjoyed each of the following games:

Katamari Damacy (PS2)
We Love Katamari (PS2)
The Munchables (Wii)
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (Multi-Platform)
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2 (Multi-Platform)

We spent the most time with the Dark Alliance games, but the Katamari games are her favorites. We are still playing through The Munchables.

My wife really enjoys Boom Blox. She isn't much into traditional video games, but she thinks Kirby's Epic Yarn is OK.
