PS1 emulator coming for PS2

Post by Mozgus »

Yeah you read that right. The main guy behind ESR has been working on a PS1 emulator for PS2.

http://psx-scene.com/forums/427371-post35.html

I wouldn't call bullshit on this, given his history with the ESR project. You may be asking why you'd want to emulate PS1 games when the PS2 can already play them natively, using the PS1 architecture it houses. Well, after reading his progress, I can think of 3 main reasons already.

1) When he implements hardware GPU emulation, which he says actually runs better than the software plugin, this would allow for all your basic enhancements like 640x480 resolution, anti aliasing, and filtered textures.
2) It looks like he mentions that games can be played via USB storage and the internal hard drive, as well as "host" which means via a LAN.
3) He also said that aside from using PS1 memory cards, you could keep your save files on other mediums as listed above. Would be nice to have both the PS1 game and it's saves on the hard drive in your PS2. You could get a great big and convenient PS1 collection going.

I look forward to this.

Pretty cool stuff. Sony implemented a pretty poor texture enhancement feature in the PS2, so I was always disappointed my PS1 games didn't really look any better on the PS2.

Sony did such a bad job with the PS2's abillity to play PSX games. I'm happy to see someone make the effort to improve on it.

I want a PS2 emulator for the regular old PS.

Hey, I can dream.

I would mainly use it so I wouldn't have to have ps1 memory cards people like to charge bullshit prices for.

I HATED the fact that you couldn't save PS1 games onto the PS2 memory cards. Instead, i've got to swap my cards around constantly to try and find a save that I need. I've got loads of memory cards btw, and it's a pain. I'm not listing every single game save onto the memory cards because it changes all the time. This would be very useful. Especially so that I can access all my 'backups' on my server... ;)
