No, I wouldn't be surprised! Well, maybe a little. You weren't a prick. You offered constructive criticism without belittling. The actual content of your responses could easily have come from him though. (That's a compliment!)Doctor Fugue wrote:Well said. Very true. I am not of the opinion that any reviewer is an expert in the genres they review. In fact, I think I am with the majority of "I just like games." I play all kinds and give any a shot. If it is fun, then it scores better, doesn't matter the genre. If I had a site that was geared toward a specific genre, I would of course be more versed in those genres, but im not, and I don't claim to be.ZenLogikos wrote: I believe Doc's point was that if you were intending to publish a professional review rather than just a personal opinion, and you're not an expert in the genre, then "Is the review even valid?". Are you providing a useful service by offering the review, or just filling space on your site?
Setting and gameplay (and title).Simply because it borrowed the "1942 era" setting?
It just has an old school feel to it, more so than other XBLA games I have played that are take from that type of gameplay. I would not say a direct port (which XBLA has plenty of) would have an old school 'feel' .. because that is sort of redundant. Is is an old school game, it is impossible for it to have a 'new school feel' because of that. Joint Strike is a new take on an old game, that could have easily felt nothing like the original.. but it does.. so it has that old school feel. How can an old-school remake be more old-school than an actual 'old school' game?
Meh. Different strokes for different folks. I play Tetris for the high score and amount of tetris' I can rack up. Some people play for the amount of lines they can get or a high amount of t-spins. I play a shooter to beat it, the score is fairly irrelevant to me. I still enjoy themThis is where you miss the point the most. The shoot 'em up genre is ALL ABOUT SCORE and scoring systems. It's about achieving a high score, preferably without dying. Length is therefore irrelevant. Score can always be improved upon, therefore the game has infinite replayability.

Edit: I can't find any mention of it on the UK Playstation website. Strange.

So perhaps in reality I am a hate-filled machine, but I have been programmed to believe I am a helpful and contributing member of the gaming community?racketboy wrote:That'd be like finding out you were a Cylon....Doctor Fugue wrote:Well said. And perhaps there are many copies of me on different forums, and we all believe ourselves to be the only one.

What's up Doctor Fugue? I knew I saw you from somewhere. You are from the shmups forum. I had been a dedicated reader of that site and have been going there for a couple of years until I joined this forum. I remembered reading that argument about reviews and such, about how a normal driver can't review a ferrari, etc. and someone in there got banned. Just don't remembered who but I thought it was funny that someone can be so passionate about such a thing (or anal), though he was a bit out of line. Anyway, I couldn't join shmups.com because I don't have one of those email account. Oh well, enough rambling. Just want to say nice to meet you that's all. Didn't realize you were in this forum as well.
