When i first started collecting games, i came across a hidden pawn shop in a, whats known as a "bad neighborhood". i went in and saw a bundle of three genesis games "the Tick", "Looney tunes, and none other than MUSHA. the latter of the games seemed "cool" but didnt grab my attention, i asked the lady behind the counter "how much" she responded $10. i thought to my self its overpriced, if i can get them for six dollars, ill buy it. again, i interupted her from her sitcom [Good Times] "could you do any better on this?" she replied in a annoyed tone "look kid the price tag says $10 because we feel its a fair price. if i thought it was worth less, i would have marked it down! now you can buy it or leave it. i left the store angry swearing never to return.
1hr later: sped back to the pawn shop only to relize someone else had bought it.
I have never seen it in the "wild" since....

You can't even pronounce "RPG" or "FPS" like you can "Shmup"
Arpuhguh? Fffpiss? Bah!
"Shmup" is far more elegant!
The DS remake of Dragon Quest V was out of print for some time and was commanding ridiculous prices. I looked around the internet for awhile, only to find that used copies were about $55 at the lowest (and usually that was card-only) and new copies as expensive as $120.
The GameFAQs message board featured several posters who claimed that they found copies in K-Mart discount bins. I visited two K-Marts, one local and one about an hour away. Also visited a GameStop (also an hour away) that apparently had a used copy. Turns out it was card-only and they were asking $29.99 (my fault for not checking first).
Eventually I gave up looking for one "in the wild" and went back to the internet. Found an excellent-condition used copy, an Amazon seller was asking $70 for it. Decided to "sleep on it" before biting the bullet the making the purchase. The next day Amazon announced they had another batch of new games and the price plummeted to $29.99. Ordered one that day.
I imagine people who were looking for Radiant Historia earlier this year went through a similar experience.

I think buying just to resell down the line is a pretty crummy practice, but if it helps you, once those reprints go out, the price will creep back up. It happened with the gamecube ports of Resident Evil 2 and 3.

Yeah some of the Atlus DS RPGs that had low print runs are quite pricey now (like My World My Way).
Radiant Historia was pretty damn popular though. Made sense for Atlus to print more. Now if only Sega would print some more copies of Infinite Space...
Crazy as it may sound today, the game I remember being most frustrated trying to find was NBA Live 2001 of PS2 when it first came out. I don't remember how many stores I had to visit but living in Chicago at the time I had to venture to a distant suburb to get it. Now, pretty much all sports games are as common as an ant at a picnic, even on day one. Back then it was a bitch to find certain games early in their release. I also remember WWF No Mercy ofr N64 being a pain to find.
My hardest to get game was Breath of Fire for the SNES.
I was having a bit of an Ebay kick, and I was buying up the Square RPG's that I wanted in my collection. The time had come to get Breath of Fire. I found one that I liked and that wasn't crazy expensive. I bid on it a few times with other people, but the auction ended with the reserve not being met. (This of course lasted days)
I contacted the seller to see if he was going to re-list the item. He said yes and he did, but this time he did a buy it now (which was a huge amount more than I wanted to pay) and a "best offer." I submitted my best offer of $30, to haggle a bit and see what he would come back with. (The buy it now was over $100)
He of course said no, and re-submitted an offer of $75. I said no, and re-submitted $35.
Here is where I get lucky. He accidently accepted it? I thought he gave in, but he later contacted me and said it was an accident. Of course, as soon as I got the acceptance, I used PayPal to pay and was very happy. He wanted to do some crazy stuff where he was going to cancel or not send or something. He has super high status on Ebay so I know he didn't want to piss me off.
I told him no. Sorry. I've paid for my item, send it or I leave bad feedback. (And since it's on my credit card, I get the money back anyway) He goofs off for a few days and then finally says ok, and sends it.
3 weeks later (no kidding) I get the game in the mail. Only, it isn't Breath of Fire minty complete in box. It's Inspector Gadget. WTF!!?
I immediately contact him. I know what he is trying to do, and it isn't going to work. He of course says sorry, but he doesn't believe me and I have to send back Gadget at my own expense. I tell him no, I'll just take it up with Ebay instead. He doesn't like this, so he says he'll refund my shipping, but that he won't send out Breath of Fire until he gets Gadget back.
So I package it all up, send it back, he claims to recieve it (he had too, I did that thing where you have to sign for it) then he says he sends me Breath of Fire. I'm thinking, what is going to happen next. It takes another 3 weeks (I know, because Oregon and California are so far apart) but I get the package, and it actually has the right game and it's in minty shape. (I was so worried that he was going to damage it or something, but I guess he decided that his reputation was more valuable.)
In the end, it took something like 12 weeks total, and a lot of my time and anger. He asks me, Can you still give me a 5 star rating? Are you friggin' joking me?!!
I bought it 3 times and a trade. The first two times the sellers lost it, and refunded me my money. Then I tried to get it through a trade, and again, they couldn't find it. Finally, the third time trying to buy it, I finally got my hands on it. Then when I finally got it, it was frustratingly difficult and demanded hours and hours of grinding to get anywhere. So I didn't enjoy it anyways.
