I'm still getting it handed to me by the stage 3 boss on most runs. I'm trying not to bomb since it kills the chain so much, but as often as i'm dying fully stocked on bombs, my current approach is fool-hardy.

I think the reason I like maniac better is cuz in original mode it doesn't ever feel like it's something I can't navigate (but yet I can't apparently) so I die 3x w/o every using up bombs.

I played maniac mode only today, i'll give original some more run tomorrow.

I coast through lvl1 no problem. Usually hit 10-11M on first level. Level 2 I'm fine until the boss. Fuck that squid. He's a total jerk. Always takes a life or two. Level 3 is insane, but fun as hell. But I haven't made it to lvl3 boss yet. Anyway, that 41M score has been by far my highest. As in, usually I'm hitting less than 30M, so that was like an amazing run for me.

Stage 3 is all about finding the enemies that clear the screen. It went from absolutely nuts to pretty manageable. It took like 7-8 runs to fully figure it out, but now I hit that boss every run. The midboss on that stage often costs me a life.

The squid. His first wave is pretty easy, just like the 3rd wave of the boss 1 on DDPR, weave left, right, left, right, left, while holding your power shot.

His second wave is pretty tough though, haven't found a path I like yet, I do often die once there.

His third wave is pretty easy as well, can center at bottom and slightly weave left and right.

I have made it to the S3 mid-boss a couple times. At any rate, I feel confident that if I buckle down can up my score still. 41M isn't bad of course. But I feel I've got more in me.

Yeah, for sure. I don't see me catching Chaz anytime soon, but I def. feel like stage 4 boss, maybe stage 5 is a given.

Is there a second extend? First is at 35mil. If theres a second at say 75 mil or 100 mil, that would make me feel better.

that explains it! On my 41M run I thought I was dead and then had an extra life. Wasn't sure if I hit an extend or if I just wasn't counting lives closely. Anyway, good news as I've hit 30M+ a couple times more meaning the extend is close by.

3rd boss is a dink. Got to him 2 runs in a row with 3 lives and couldn't get past him. On this last one I even intentionally bombed with the first guy, 3 lives and 3 bombs used - he's still standing and i'm not.

I have improved my first and second round scores though by being really aggressive and using the right shot on almost every enemy.

Hitting 11.5 mil on stage 1 and 31-32 mil by end of stage 2. But either dying or bombing early on stage 3 (stupidly) and lowering my chain counter. I have a slight score improvement, but not excited enough about it to post it.
