Opinions: Videogame consoles - 8-bit thru the present

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Opinions: Videogame consoles - 8-bit thru the present

Post by ZenLogikos »

When I read and/or reply to 'favorite console' type posts, I always feel the need to clarify my favoritism for the record. Most of us are level-headed, and try not to be fanboys, but we all have our prejudices and preferences. I know a lot of people here are Sega fans. I'm more of a Nintendo fan. People love extolling the virtues of one console over another, so I say we consolidate that. If the thread becomes popular enough we could sticky and just reference. Or it may all be a bad idea - so tell me to scrap it. I'm just curious about your thoughts on each of the popular consoles that came after the GREAT VIDEOGAME CRASH OF '83 (TM) 8)
(I don't mean to step on any toes with your recent topic, kingmohd84)

One word. A sentence or two. Whatever...

NES: So many classics, the original Castlevania trilogy, the Mario Bros. trilogy, Zelda trilogy etc - I was really too young to appreciate most of the NES's titles though.

Genesis: Such an amazing console for beat em ups and shooters with a really vibrant colour pallete

SNES: The SNES was the first console I owned, previously only owning handhelds, and games like Link to the Past, Mario World, Super Metroid & Super Castlevania IV defined my childhood - plus, the huge selection of awesome RPGs like Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI & Breath of Fire made me fall in love with the genre.

Saturn: The Saturn has such a great collection of SHMUPS and has probably the most impressive import scene of any console, plus compared to the PSX & N64 the Saturn produced some amazing 2d graphics, and while it's 3d capabilities weren't as acomplished as it's competitors there were still some great 3d games.

NeoGeo: A super-expensive console to own and maintain, but when it comes to arcade action in your home there really is no better than a NeoGeo. I never owned a NeoGeo, but a rich friend was lucky enough to have one and through him I got my first experience of games like Metal Slug, Last Blade, Magician Lord & King of Fighters.

PS1: The PSX imo is the best console released to date when it comes to JRPGs - not only does it have my favourite JRPG ever in Valkyrie Profile, but it also has countless more awesome games well worth playing.

N64: The N64 had a really unique lineup with some amazing games like Blast Corps, Turok 1 & 2, Sin & Punishment, Ocarina & Majora's etc but was the first Nintendo console to suffer from a lack of quality 3rd party titles.

Dreamcast: The Dreamcast was a very unique console - as SEGA's swansong the Dreamcast & it's awesome lineup epitomised everything SEGA stood for in the minds of their fans; awesome arcade-style action, unique RPGs and adventurous unique titles unlike anything available on any other console.

PS2: The PS2 has such a huge library, anyone can find somthing to enjoy here - but for me the PS2 stands out as a JRPG machine with a very good import scene too.

XBOX: The Xbox was a very good console, considering it was Microsofts first foray into the business. While the lineup became quickly filled with FPS games and action titles, there was a good showing of unique titles that made the Xbox stand out - games like Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shenmue II & Jet Set Radio Future were the last gasp of the SEGA we all knew and loved, plus titles like Morrowind, Crimson Skies, Otogi 1 & 2, Sudeki & Fable added a bit of diversity to the lineup.

Gamecube: I bought the Gamecube willing to give Nintendo another chance - the N64 had been great, but towards the end of it's life it felt like one long wait for the next 1st party title, with very little to enjoy in between. For the most part the Gamecube was the same, while it has a great library of games like Baten Kaitos, Pikmin, Windwaker, RE4, Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia Legends & Tales of Symphonia, there just wasn't much worth playing for me in between.

XBOX 360: The 360 has an amazing lineup, but the console is a piece of shit. Live is amazing, but I find online gaming and the people who populate online gaming services increasingly annoying, so I don't see the need to pay for Live and a service that isn't that much of a big deal to me, especially when I can get the same on the PS3 for free. Also, i'm sick of Microsofts hardware problems and am voting with my wallet - i'm on my 3rd 360 and this one looks to be on it's way out; but instead of sending it off to MS, i'm just gonna leave it. I don't want to support a console with such terrible build quality.

PS3: The PS3 in contrast to the 360 is an amazing piece of kit, great build quality - the games lineup is a bit shallow, but thanks to Sony's approach to digitally distributed titles, this isn't too much of a problem. PSN games like Warhawk, Siren & PixelJunk Eden have kept me more than occupied while waiting for the next full-release titles.

Wii: The Wii is probably the only console I ever wished I didn't buy. Waggle is a gimmick, and one I don't much care for - while it can be used well, more often than not it isn't and I feel like i'd prefer to be playing the game using a normal controller. Also, while Nintendo have broken their 3rd party curse, now 3rd parties are shovelling shit out for the Wii on a weekly basis, but unfourtunatly it is just that; shovelware shite. If it wasn't for crazy Japanese developers making games like No More Heroes, Mad World & Fatal Frame 4, I would've sold the Wii a long time ago.

What do you mean by "the lost of greatness" and "awesome but behind"?

Presumably he means the Saturn was where SEGA lost their greatness and that the N64 was great, but couldn't match "the evil Sony empire" lol, in terms of sales.

NES: I played you first as a little red and white box and then dad got the US one for me for Chanukka. The only system that was ever bought for me.

Genesis: I sold my NES for you when you first came out and at first I was stoked how awesome you were but you dissapointed me greatly as most of your 1st gen games bored me quickly. I bought you again a few years later when a lot of kick-ass games were out.

SNES: My all-time favorite console that most of the games I once loved still hold the test of time. That's solid baby~

Saturn: My runner up favorite and my beloved import machine. The Sat controller and SNES are tied for my favorite controllers~

PS1: I had so much fun with you but like the NES, many of your titles just don't hold up anymore.

N64: Party at XXXX's place! Goldeneye!

Dreamcast: So many good games, so many great memories, so long...

PS2: I bought into hype for the first time, got it on launch day, and was incredibly dissapointed with the initial games thus it was my DVD player for the first 9 months. After two years and many years, I've played so many great games on it.

XBOX: I never got one because everything I wanted was on the PS2 except JSRF...

Gamecube: I love the little black box but if I didn't have the PS2 also, I would have been a bit lonely game-wise.

XBOX 360: I'm not gonna get one for a while as it's too much money to blow on something as leary as that is in longevity.

PS3: I'm not gonna get one for a while as it's too much money to blow on something that doesn't have that many games I want to play.

Wii: I like it and I'm having a lot of fun with it; it's what I've wanted at home for a long time. Plus my wife and I get to game a lot more together now as well as on the DS~
