Looks like a lot to take in if he doesn't know much about what he's looking for in the first place.

Basically the model 1 has "oval" power and reset buttons. Picture:

And the model 2 has round power and reset buttons. Picture:

The model 2 is generally easier to deal with if you ever need to repair or replace anything, because there are more model 2 units floating around. That said, there are a few different internal revisions of the model 2. Still, the Saturn itself is affordable enough that if repairs are in order you're bound to be able to find a cheap replacement for parts. I have 3 Saturns around here in various states of functionality.

so, i should be looking for a MK-80001? or will the mk-80000a work with the modchip as well? the modchip instructions say that the 32 pin model is recommended.

Remember like racketboy says, a modchip enables just backup copies on its own.

Region code and video format (if you need those mods) are entirely separate.

trying to figure out 32pin vs 64pin by model no is a lost cause in my experience.

Just get a model2 (round buttons) and pray. The good news is if you do get a 64 pin, I've had great success with them, just switching the 14/19 solder bridge jumper on the chip if it's a 64; the "stock" setting works for 32pin but not 64pin IC.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
