Why are these PS2 Slim fans bought?

Is it to stop the buzzing sound which frequently occurs with some people's machines or do the fans totally break down or clog up?

My PS2 Slim has been buzzing pretty much ever since I bought it. It was annoying me today, this morning, enough that I decided to open it up and see if it was clogged or something, but not much dust can even fit in those things, so I tried loosening the screws on the fan a bit (not all the way) and that may have helped as it didn't go back to buzzing when I left a game idle for an hour+ afterwards.

If the other fans are about providing extra cooling then can you just cut holes into the plastic so it has more venting, or play it with the top taken off and it wouldn't overheat?

I think its more of a replacement you'd get for repair than to replace a working fan. If your fan makes a noise on some fans you can put some bearing grease in them to make them quiet again. I'm not sure if you can get to the bearing in the PS2 fan or not because mine is still working fine.

My fan said it was made by Minebea-Matsushita Motor Corporation*, model BM4010-09W-B77, with "NMB-MAT7" written at the top, and "VA2" enclosed in a rectangle near the bottom. I think it wasn't screwed in too tight -- it seemed screwed in normally -- but it's the design of the PS2's internals, how it fits, that is too tight for that size of fan exactly.

I played Doom for about an hour and it stayed quiet, but will update if it goes back to buzzing.

*In China, even though that's a Japanese name. The back of the PS2 also says Made in China. Are all of them? My older game consoles were usually made in Japan.

Ah ha - must have been assembled in Shanghai, according to this map:

But it wasn't the assembly, the "Made in China" that's the issue, but the designed in Japan! Must have been too much pressure to make the PS2 tight and small and they didn't have a better-fitting fan available at the time that was affordable.

Sometimes creating new holes or just leaving things open can backfire. Not speaking about the PS2 slim necessarily, but I know with some stuff the air flow is directed and if that flow is tampered with, it can reduce the efficiency.
