I started playing Crysis 2 a little after getting it on the Steam sale. Also Rage, though I bought that on Amazon for a few bucks more because discs (they sent me an EU copy, guess it's cheaper?).
I definitely don't care for the checkpoint only system of Crysis 2, though it's not as bad as the CoD style system I think. Game as a whole seems a lot easier though. I've only played through Crysis, didn't beat Warhead (played maybe 1/3 of it I guess).
I think the "non-humans ruin it" applies to basically everything Cryteam has ever done (or will do most likely). Actually, it's almost always the case that games go downhill if you set the pace with more methodical play. It didn't ruin Half-Life per se, but I didn't enjoy the last third or so of the game as much. The Uncharted games were also annoying like that. Still, with those the developers realized that it sucked and toned it back for the sequels.
Also tried E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy because I got it on Steam...anyone put time into that? It seems like it has promise as an RPG/FPS hybrid, but the interface/tutorials are *terrible*.
What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I've only put a little into EYE, but I agree, the interface is total balls. There's a core of an interesting idea and I'd like to explore it, but for now I'm playing other stuff.
As for the aliens ruin stuff, I actually find the thing I dislike about fighting the alien hordes in Half Life or Crysis is that my ammo supplies start running short. I don't mind the shift in enemy tactics or tone of the game; it must be my early 90's shooter upbringing.

Just started (a couple of days ago) Halo: Reach. Gameplay is spot on as per usual, as I consider Halo tied for first with Resistance in best playing console FPS. Graphics are a nice step up from Halo 3: ODST (especially the models). Also enjoying the "why" of what I'm doing so far. Pretty simple, but entertaining none-the-less.

The Darkness II is also one of those "game plays itself" kind of things where you run through mostly linear levels and stuff happens and there's lots of cutscenes.Xeogred wrote:
I gave up on FEAR 3 myself, I think I should've bought The Darkness II instead.
This one has an interesting enough story and really stylish comicbook style graphics though, so I'm finding it rather entertaining. It's pretty easy gameplay though. Not bad, it just lacks the challenge and creativity of the gameplay I'm experiencing in Crysis.

I always feel like I am one of the few genre fans who found Crysis to be an unplayable bore (even if it was pretty).

Really? Did you feel the same about Far Cry? I think Crysis plays like Far Cry with super powers.dsheinem wrote:I always feel like I am one of the few genre fans who found Crysis to be an unplayable bore (even if it was pretty).

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I'm a fan of neither.. STALKER had the atmosphere and gunplay right, Crysis just gave you jungles and waypoints to your next objective. And it was linear! In fact I found Crysis 2 more entertaining because it forsaked that illusion of nonlinearity that Crysis 1 offered.

I haven't played Far Cry but I enjoyed the hell out of Far Cry 2.J T wrote:Really? Did you feel the same about Far Cry? Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
The Far Cry devs went onto to do Crysis, and Crysis is more "Far Cry 2" than Far Cry 2 was. So chances are you probably wouldn't like Far Cry.
But yeah STALKER completely destroys all these games.
@JT: Well how's it compare to the first game? I was a rare fan of that one... liked the subways and stuff giving it kind of a break / slight Deus Ex feel at times. The only thing I really hear about II though is that it's extremely short.

I didn't play the first one so I don't have that to compare to. I know that Gamerforlife was a big fan of the first and hated the second.Xeogred wrote: @JT: Well how's it compare to the first game?
