That's odd. The second one has difficulty settings that will adjust as you play, if I'm remember correctly. But you'll also get hilariously trash-talked by an incredulous dolphin in one level if you stink at it ("I am not sure you are the famous Ecco"). In my experience the first game is way harder, but I'm only speaking of the Genesis versions. I haven't played them on other consoles.
Hmm, well then again I guess maybe I haven't played enough of the second game to really say, that's in general what I heard. However it definitely seemed like the second game took the weirdness of the series to new heights for sure... I remember jumping into weird tubes or shooting up into the air and crazy things like that. But the weirdness is definitely why I loved the first game, so I'll have to get back to Tides of Time someday.
