Current favorable era of gaming Adult vs. kid and why?
I have always been an huge fan of all gaming systems. As a kid I remember loving the Snes and Sega genesis the most on my top list. I also enjoyed my 8 bit nes but found the 16 bit games to be so much more vibrant and robust.
Im referring to when i was around 11-13
As of now as an adult I still enjoy the classic 8 bit but really it holds almost an weird nostalgia that i can't explain. As of now tho that would not be my current most enjoyable gaming and while I will always have a place in my heart for such classics as Tmnt, double dragon, castlevania, Currently I really am in love with both the enhanced 16 bit era Sega cd and up to 32 bit And early 128 bit. Pretty much from 3do, jaguar and my now personally Favorite's Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and select great titles on the Ps1.
When I play these system and pop in Panzer dragoon or Astal, nights, Sonic adventure, Shenmue, Resident evil, D, Shinobi, Crash bandicoot, And many more I feel a sense of magic and creativity that is most memorable and happy. For me this era of game's showed some of the most risky, fun and damn right engaging games I have ever played.
For me it felt like a perfect time where the developers could truly take you on any jorney they wanted to while still leaving it up to you to choose what your seeing. The older 8 bit left a little to much to the imagination while the current gen leaves almost nothing to the imagination but that inbetween point for better or worse seemed just right.
Mind you I love all eras of gaming dating back to atari 2600 but that's not what this is about
It's was a magic time where technology allowed game's to be vass and beautiful with full amazing story while still maintaining a sense of imagination and and excitement.
My vote is sega cd up to Sega Dreamcast with everything inbetween and I do mean everything even the underated 3do system.
As of now. What is your most exciting era of gaming and why?

Interesting concept. As a kid, my favorite era was probably the 32/64-bit era. I had a lot of fond memories of my N64 (and Game Boy). As an adult, I'm not so sure. I might actually go out on a limb and say the 128-bit era, due to the massive turbulence in the industry at the time making it fascinating to observe.

I was very young when I had a Sega Master System, and then had a Mega Drive up to the age of 12. Although I enjoyed the classics like Streets of Rage and Sonic, all these games were bought for me or given by my dad. I am most nostalgic about my two favourite systems, the N64 and the Dreamcast. There are various reasons why, such as having to save my pocket money for games, getting the monthly magazine and feeling part of a community (this was when people had one console and you went round a friends to experience the others). Getting the N64 also predetermined who I hung out with at school, and shaped my teenage life. Up until Christmas 2000 when I got a Dreamcast, for Shenmue, whilst most people got a PS2. My Dreamcast lasted 6 months before it died, but those 6 months were magical. After I got a PS2 I went back to multiplayer sessions on WWE and Timesplitters but one friend got a Gamecube and then another got an Xbox and it sort of separated the friend group. Plus we left school and went separate ways. I owned the Xbox, Gamecube and PS2 (multiple times) but I think there is a certain magic of staying up all night when you are 14, playing Goldeneye or Mario Kart, that I feel will never be replicated particularly in the modern day era.
I've enjoyed online gaming, but it's not the same experience. Add into the mix that I have moved away from friends to start a family, it is incredibly difficult to enjoy multiplayer games.
Single player games however, I feel that as I have got older I've appreciated them more. I never ventured much into a Zelda game until I left home.
So yeah, I'd say the 98-02 era was my favourite. Just because I didn't have the internet to breeze through games, I had plenty of multiplayer meetups with friends and you got ten games for the system that lasted you YEARS. I feel as gaming has got more advanced, there are almost too many good games, although it may just be the fact I grew up. Sorry for the rant!

Re: Current favorable era of gaming Adult vs. kid and why?
There was a certain magic to the 16-bit era that no other time in gaming has quite captured for me. Gaming was more fun and less corporate than it is today. There were more original titles, more bright and colorful games (versus the drab, brown, gray, depressing shooters that are everywhere now). There was a great emphasis on artistry rather than realism in visuals that I loved. The first time I saw Green Hill zone in Sonic the Hedgehog was a memorable moment. It was so damn beautiful, bright, colorful, and happy.
16-bit consoles were refining everything that was great about 8-bit gaming, and it felt like the first major technology shift for me. Seeing 16-bit consoles run near perfect ports of arcade games was something that blew my mind. The whole world changed for me when I played Street Fighter II and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time on my SNES. Holy shit! I'm playing arcade games in my freaking house! Next would come Mortal Kombat II.
Somehow the gaming industry's shift to 3D didn't amaze me as much as when 16-bit games first starting bridging the gap between console gaming and arcade games. When gaming when 3D with the N64 and the Playstation, everything was slow, clunky, and ugly. Even though I came to love many games at the time (like Tomb Raider), the shift to 3D seemed in a lot of ways like a step back. It wasn't really until the Dreamcast that 3D gaming seemed to recapture some of that 16-bit magic for me. Everything about the DC and the games it was pumping out felt old school, retro, creative, arcade inspired, and fun. It was a stark contrast to the much more corporate feeling PS2 and Xbox that I believe came a bit later, or the purple box with no games to play known as the Gamecube. There was something exciting about the DC and Sega's renewed effort to try and dominate the console market. It's too bad the DC was destined for an early retirement. After which I resigned myself to the PS2, Xbox and GC, which had great games, but neither console filled me with that joy and excitement that the DC did. It was like a part of the industry died with the DC, as dramatic as that sounds.
Also, the 16-bit era was the time of the print mags, and boy did I love reading EGM and the occasional issue of Gamepro or whatever other gaming magazine I could find. I can't describe the feeling of excitement I got from seeing screen shots of an awesome new game and anticipating more info every issue and having my excitement grow to Christmas like proportions waiting for the game to be released. You can't appreciate that now, given the overdose of info you get from the internet now and days. Plus, reading about something instantly with the click of a button on a monitor isn't as exciting as waiting for an issue in the mail, opening it, getting that new smell, and flipping through the pages to see what was going on in the game industry like you were some kind of insider being privy to exclusive info.
Everything seemed better back then, but those may be nostalgia goggles that I have on, or the simple fact that everything about life seems new and exciting when you're young. As an adult, I feel like I have seen everything and if feels like life, as well as the gaming industry, holds few surprises for me. I'm much harder to impress as an adult gamer than I was as a kid. At some point in your adult life you become at least a little bit jaded. Plus, I think I liked gaming better in some ways when it was still somewhat of a niche thing. It made it special. Today though, gaming feels like another cog in the corporate machine

As a kid, my favorite generation was the 128-bit era because that was what was current. I liked 32-bit and 16-bit as well, but not near so much. 128 is still my favorite but I have a greater appreciation for the 32 and 16-bit eras than I used to.

As a kid I loved DK64. I loathe that game now.

This. As a kid I was so willing to shove my old games aside for the next big thing which for me back in the 90's was ultimately PC gaming. Today I can't believe I was so stupid to sell my Atari 2600 and NES (luckily I held on to everything after that).dsheinem wrote:As a kid: the future

Ya I never played this game as a kid but always had alot of love for the donkey kong series 1,2 and now donkey kong country returns which was fantastic. So I went out and got a copie of dk64 and wow I really disliked that game it annoyed me and I felt it was muc better as a 2.5D game which is most liky the reason they went back to the classic style with the wii.Nintendork666 wrote:As a kid I loved DK64. I could not agree more with this statement. I really love games now-a-days also cause there are some really immersion and wounderful games out there and Nintendo still keeps it's classic feel with great progression but yes after the Dreamcast stoped being made I don't deel there was as much risk or experimentation taken on any other system .There was something exciting about the DC and Sega's renewed effort to try and dominate the console market. It's too bad the DC was destined for an early retirement. Im very happy with fact that red spot games still makes games for the dreamcast cause some people i here say they dig it out of the closet to play something but for me it's pluged in though Vga on my hdtv wight there with my modern system's and truth be told I play the dreamcast and my saturn not only as much but more then my current gen. There are still so many games I have to play and I never get tired of any of the classic period. (Illbleed I have beaten so many time I lost count)
One thing im happy for is that Sega is still making game's and also that Nintendo is still here cause personally they were the 2 best gaming company's ever and without them there would not be a today
